Having a vegetable garden is always interesting.

In the winter I will buy a cauliflower and some carrots and a few sunchokes and we have our vegetables for the week. That will give us a reasonable serving for each dinner.

In the summer it starts with a handful of green beans every other day, a few chard leaves and the occasional, small summer squash.

It escalates to several pounds of green beans every day and five or six summer squash. (I cut the chard back when the rest start producing.)

As the chard starts growing again, the beans and summer squash taper off. They’ll rebound again for another, lesser, production run.

But there always comes a time when I have a little of everything and not enough of anything.

Summer Vegetable Mélange, II

Total time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

Instructions:

Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat.

Add onion, pepper, garlic and sauté for 5 minutes..

Add green beans, water, cover and simmer for 5 minutes.

Add zucchini, tomatoes, herbs, spices and simmer for 10 minutes.

Add chard, lemon juice and simmer for 5 minutes longer.

Stir well and serve

The new barn door is finished…. almost.

The trim needs to be finished and painted but all the locking mechanisms are in place so it’s a usable, secure door.

The old door has been taken apart and you can see the frame laying on the ground.

Guapa is on her way to do the hourly lizard check on the sunny wall. She is quite determined that no lizard shall maintain its tail.

My blighted tomatoes continue to amaze me.

I managed to contain the blight and the existing tomatoes are ripening.

I left any new growth alone to help.

Now the new growth is growing like mad and no new sign of blight.

I have tomato sticks with huge green canopies that have little tomatoes starting. I have no idea how the weak branches will support the growth…. But I’ll find out soon.

Nature is so educational…. and baffling.
