%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20instructions%20for%20getting%20the%20cabbage%20leaves%20off%20really%20works.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ethe%20one%20cabbage%20from%20my%20garden%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFirst,%20I%20cored%20the%20cabbage.%20%20Not%20a%20major%20operation,%20but%20just%20some%20of%20the%20inner%20stem.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ekind%20of%20hard%20to%20see,%20but%20I%20removed%20some%20of%20the%20core%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENext,%20I%20brought%20a%20pot%20of%20water%20to%20boil%20and%20gently%20place%20the%20cabbage%20in%20the%20pot.%20%20Within%20a%20minute%20or%20two,%20the%20leaves%20started%20getting%20really%20loose.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20kept%20carefully%20peeling%20off%20the%20leaves%20as%20they%20loosend%20and,%20once%20I%20had%20about%2014%20leaves%20peeled%20off,%20I%20removed%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20cabbage%20and%20let%20the%20removed%20leaves%20simmer%20for%20another%205%20minutes.%20%20Then%20I%20drained%20and%20rinsed%20them%20in%20cold%20water.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20the%20meantime,%20I%20had%20to%20cook%20some%20rice.%20%20I%20was%20disappointed%20that%20I%20had%20not%20thought%20to%20put%20the%20rice%20on%20sooner%20because%20I%20wanted%20to%20use%20brown%20rice%20and%20that%20takes%20longer%20than%20white%20rice.%20%20But,%20I%20then%20noticed%20that%20there%20were%20microwave%20instructions%20on%20the%20long-grain%20brown%20rice%20package.%20%20%20(Obviously%20not%20Lundberg%20brand%20%E2%80%93%20at%20least%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20imagine%20they%20have%20microwave%20instrcutions%20on%20their%20rice.%20%20I%E2%80%99ll%20have%20to%20double%20check%20one%20of%20these%20days.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere%20is%20the%20deal.%20%20It%20was%20passable%20for%20use%20in%20stuffed%20cabbage%20and%20the%20stuffed%20eggplant%20I%20make%20a%20few%20days%20later,%20but%20it%20really%20didn%E2%80%99t%20cook%20much%20more%20quickly%20than%20if%20I%20had%20cooked%20it%20stovetop.%20%20And%20DO%20NOT%20microwave%20brown%20rice%20for%20use%20as%20a%20side%20dish!!!!%20%20YUCK!%20%20The%20texture%20is%20awful.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOkay,%20back%20to%20the%20stuffed%20cabbage.%20%20After%20cooling%20the%20cabbage%20and%20mixing%20up%20the%20meat%20with%20the%20other%20stuffing%20ingredients,%20I%20put%20it%20all%20together.%20As%20noted%20in%20the%20recipe,%20just%20a%20plam-full%20is%20enough%20for%20each%20roll.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen,%20roll%20away!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20here%20they%20are,%20ready%20to%20go%20into%20the%20pot.%20%20By%20the%20way,%20that%20god-awful%20looking%20cookie%20tray%20and%20that%20scratched%20up%20red%20plastic%20thing%20is%20my%20%E2%80%9Craw%20meat%E2%80%9D%20cutting%20board.%20%20I%20really%20need%20to%20get%20a%20regular%20board%20to%20dedicate%20to%20raw%20meat!%20But,%20in%20the%20meantime,%20it%20works%20and%20contains%20any%20straying%20liquids.%20%20BOB,%20don%E2%80%99t%20read%20this!%20%20Bob%20is%20is%20friend%20of%20mine%20who%20is%20vegetarian.%20%20For%20a%20vegetarian%20option,%20tempeh,%20bulgar%20wheat,%20and/or%20ground/finely%20chopped%20seitan%20(wheat%20gluten)%20would%20be%20excellent%20in%20a%20stuffed%20cabbage.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20final%20step%20is%20to%20coat%20the%20bottom%20of%20a%20big%20pot%20(I%20used%20my%206%20quart%20dutch%20oven)%20with%20a%20thin%20layer%20of%20sauce/juice,%20add%20the%20cabbage%20rolls,%20cover%20with%20sauce/juice,%20and%20add%20a%20bit%20of%20water%20if%20you%20need%20to%20have%20the%20liquid%20cover,%20or%20just%20about%20cover%20the%20cabbage%20rolls.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen,%20simmer%20for%20an%20hour%20or%20so%20until%20tender.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20pleased%20with%20the%20results,%20although%20both%20my%20husband%20and%20I%20noted%20that%20these%20were%20not%20like%20our%20Mom%E2%80%99s.%20%20I%20will%20try%20it%20with%20the%20tomato%20juice/vinegar/sugar%20next%20time%20%E2%80%93%20unless%20I%20borrow%20back%20my%20Mom%E2%80%99s%20recipe%20box%20from%20my%20sister-in-law%20Lorraine%20and%20try%20my%20Mom%E2%80%99s%20recipe%20first.%20%20(We%20take%20turns%20having%20the%20recipe%20box%20at%20each%20of%20our%20homes.)%20I%20am%20pretty%20sure%20her%20%E2%80%9CGlopskies%E2%80%9D%20had%20stewed%20tomatoes%20in%20them.%20%20Hey%20Lori%20%E2%80%93%20remember%20Glopskies?%20%20(Long%20story%E2%80%A6.BUT,%20that%20reminds%20me,%20I%20need%20to%20get%20the%20%E2%80%9Cgirls%E2%80%9D%20together%20to%20make%20what%20my%20Mom%20called%20Chris%20Chickies,%20a%20Polish%20version%20of%20bow%20pastries.%20)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EANYWAY%20%E2%80%93%20this%20is%20a%20great%20basic%20recipe%20for%20stuffed%20cabbage.%20%20And%20the%20possible%20variations%20are%20endless%20for%20all,%20whether%20you%20are%20omnivore%20or%20vegetarian.%20A%20winner,%20all%20around.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E[Disclaimer%20-%20I%20am%20way%20too%20tired%20to%20proofread%20this.%20%20Please%20ignore%20typos%20unless%20they%20could%20cause%20an%20grievous%20error%20in%20the%20kitchen.%20%20%20]%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
