%20for%20sopping%20and%20grating%20pepper%20jack%20cheese%20over%20the%20top.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAs%20you've%20probably%20figured%20out%20from%20the%20title%20of%20this%20post,%20to%20make%20this%20you%20will%20need%20black%20beans.%202%20cups%20of%20shiny,%20dry,%20black%20beans.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESoak%20the%20black%20beans%20in%20cold%20water%20overnight.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlthough%20I%20didn't%20get%20many%20pictures%20of%20the%20process,%20I%20do%20want%20to%20look%20a%20little%20more%20closely%20at%20one%20of%20the%20ingredients.%20This%20was%20my%20first%20time%20using%20chilpotle%20chilies%20in%20adobo%20sauce.%20This%20ingredient%20puts%20the%20%22spicy%22%20in%20the%20name%20of%20this%20soup.%20I%20found%20them%20in%20the%20International%20Foods%20aisle%20at%20my%20local%20grocery.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThese%20smoky,%20spicy%20chilies%20are%20stewed%20in%20a%20sauce%20with%20tomatoes,%20garlic,%20vinegar,%20salt,%20and%20spices.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20chopped%20them%20up%20before%20adding%20to%20the%20soup.%20Go%20easy...they%20pack%20a%20punch!%20I%20added%20the%20required%202%20chilpotle%20chilies%20and%20the%20result%20was%20too%20spicy%20for%20my%20kiddos,%20although%20%22just%20right%22%20for%20the%20adults%20who%20shared%20this%20soup.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20found%20this%20recipe%20in%20The%20Mixer%20Bible,%20so%20the%20mixer%20should%20serve%20a%20purpose%20here.%20The%20recipe%20instructed%20to%20used%20the%20fruit/vegetable%20strainer%20mixer%20attachment%20and%20run%20the%20soup%20through%20twice.%20It%20seemed%20like%20such%20a%20hassle%20to%20assemble%20the%20attachment%20just%20to%20run%20the%20soup%20through%20and%20then%20have%20to%20take%20the%20attachment%20apart%20and%20wash%20it%20when%20I%20was%20finished.%20Instead%20I%20reached%20for%20my%20trusty%20Cuisinart%20CSB-76%20Smart%20Stick%20Hand%20Blender%20and%20went%20to%20town%20on%20those%20beans.%20Oh,%20before%20you%20%22go%20to%20town%22%20with%20your%20blender,%20you%20should%20probably%20remove%20the%20bay%20leaves.%20I%20forgot.%20Ooops.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20wasn't%20pretty.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKind%20of%20like%20a%20field%20trip%20to%20the%20sewage%20plant.%20Ewww.%20Did%20I%20just%20type%20that?%20I%20guess%20no%20one%20is%20trying%20this%20recipe%20now.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20was%20effective,%20though.%20I'd%20guess%20that%20the%20immersion%20blender%20created%20a%20smoother%20soup%20than%20the%20mixer's%20strainer%20attachment.%20The%20next%20time%20I%20make%20this%20I%20might%20take%20out%20two%20cups%20of%20cooked%20beans,%20blend%20the%20rest,%20then%20stir%20the%20beans%20back%20in%20to%20give%20it%20more%20texture.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20blending,%20I%20stirred%20in%20the%20chicken%20broth%20and%20brought%20it%20back%20to%20a%20simmer.%20Stir%20in%201/4%20cup%20of%20chopped%20cilantro%20before%20serving.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAll%20that's%20left%20to%20do%20is%20dish%20it%20up%20and%20garnish.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20dollop%20of%20sour%20cream%20cuts%20the%20heat%20and%20adds%20a%20nice%20tangy%20touch.%20The%20crunch%20of%20the%20bacon%20and%20the%20freshness%20of%20the%20cilantro%20pretty%20much%20made%20this%20perfect%20for%20me!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20I%20didn't%20completely%20turn%20you%20off%20with%20the%20immersion%20blender%20demonstration%20then%20give%20this%20a%20try!%20You%20can't%20go%20wrong%20with%20black%20bean%20soup.%20It's%20high%20in%20fiber,%20low%20in%20fat,%20and%20completely%20delicious.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESpicy%20Black%20Bean%20Soup%20from%20The%20Mixer%20Bible:%20Over%20300%20Recipes%20for%20Your%20Stand%20Mixer%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServes:%204%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1.%20Place%20beans%20in%20a%20large%20bowl.%20Add%20enough%20cold%20water%20to%20cover%20beans%20by%202%20inches.%20Cover%20and%20soak%20overnight%20at%20room%20temperature.%20Rinse%20and%20drain.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2.%20In%20a%20large%20saucepan%20over%20medium%20heat,%20cook%20bacon%20until%20browned%20and%20crispy.%20Remove%20with%20a%20slotted%20spoon%20and%20set%20aside.%20Drain%20all%20but%201%20tablespoon%20of%20fat%20from%20the%20pan.%20Add%20onion%20and%20saute%20until%20tender,%20about%205%20minutes.%20Add%20in%20the%20garlic%20and%20saute%20for%20another%202%20minutes.%20Add%20in%20the%20water,%20beans,%20bay%20leaves,%20chilies,%20carrot,%20and%20cumin.%20Bring%20to%20a%20boil.%20Reduce%20heat,%20cover,%20and%20simmer,%20stirring%20occasionally,%20until%20beans%20are%20very%20tender,%20at%20least%2070%20minutes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3.%20Attach%20the%20fruit/vegetable%20strainer%20attachment%20to%20the%20mixer.%20Set%20to%20speed%204.%20Run%20soup,%20one%20ladleful%20at%20a%20time%20through%20the%20strainer%20into%20a%20large%20bowl,%20with%20another%20bowl%20to%20catch%20the%20solids.%20Run%20the%20solids%20through%20one%20more%20time.%20OR%20process%20with%20your%20immersion%20blender,%20blender,%20or%20food%20processor.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E4.%20Return%20soup%20to%20saucepan.%20Add%20chicken%20stock%20and%20return%20to%20a%20simmer%20over%20medium%20heat,%20thinning%20with%20more%20stock%20if%20necessary.%20S
