In a large bowl, sprinkle yeast over warm water; let stand about 10 minutes. Stir in sourdough starter, whole wheat flour, brown sugar, butter and salt. Add 1/2 cup of the all-purpose flour and the baking soda, mix well. Add enough of the remaining flour to make a moderately stiff dough that pulls away from the sides of the bowl.

Turn out onto a floured surface and knead 5 to 8 minutes or until smooth, kneading in additional flour if necessary. Form into a ball and place in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover loosely, set in a warm place and let rise 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until doubled.

Punch dough down and turn onto a lightly floured surface. Form into a loaf shape and place in a greased 9" x 5" pan; cover and let rise about 1 to 1 1/2 hours or until doubled again. Bake at 375º for 30 to 35 minutes. Remove from pan and cool on a wire rack.
