Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls

  • 1 1/2 c. sourdough starter
  • 2/3 c. milk
  • 2 T. sugar
  • 1 1/2 ts. vanilla
  • 1 T. melted butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2-3 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp soda
  • 2 T. melted butter
  • 1 2/4 tsp. cinnamon mixed 1/3 c. sugar
  • Powdered sugar glaze
  • Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients:
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, softened
  • 1 cup sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

  1. Mix together first five ingredients in a large, non-metallic bowl. Stir in salt and enough flour to make a soft dough just stiff enough to handle. Turn out onto a well-floured board and sprinkle with 1/4 c. flour which has been mixed with the soda. Work flour in and knead for five minutes or more, adding more flour as necessary.
  2. Place in a buttered bowl and turn once to butter top. cover and let rise until double, about 3 hours.
  3. Punch dough down, turn out onto floured board and roll out to 9×18 rectangle. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle evenly with cinnamon sugar mixture. Roll up and cut into 1 inch slices. Arrange with sides touching in a buttered 9×13 pan. Cover and let rise until doubled, 2-3 hours. Bake at 400 for 20-30 minutes.
  4. Brush warm rolls with a glaze as below.
  5. Makes 18 rolls.
