It’s that time of year when my family is obsessed with the pro football playoffs, college basketball, college football bowls, and occasionally even hockey. It seems that the TV is always showing sports at my house, and with that there’s the demand for snacks. Can’t watch the game without them, right? Well, after a very indulgent holiday season, I’m stocking the pantry and refrigerator with healthy snacks. And that’s where Avocados From Mexico come in.

Grown in the fertile orchard land in the state of Michoacán, near the Pacific Coast, Hass Avocados from Mexico offer higher oil content than other varieties, giving the fruit a uniquely smooth and creamy taste. Avocados from Mexico are nutrient dense. That means they’re the kind of food that provides substantial amounts of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients with relatively few calories.

Avocados are also a high satiety food. That means when you eat them, you feel fuller longer due to the protein and “good fats” that they contain. Over 75% of the fat in avocados is unsaturated (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats), making them a great substitute for foods high in saturated fat. That’s why Avocados from Mexico are terrific to use in cooking and even baking!

In addition, Avocados from Mexico provide nearly 20 vitamins and minerals per 1 ounce (50 calorie) serving. Also, avocados act as a “nutrient booster” by helping the body better absorb more fat-soluble nutrients, such as alpha and beta-carotene, in foods that are eaten along with them. With so many people coming down with colds and flu this time of year, we can use all the good nutrition that Avocados from Mexico provide!

Here are just a few ideas for healthy snack ideas using Avocados from Mexico:

Sushi rolls – My husband is a wiz at making homemade sushi. But if that’s not your thing, supermarkets and warehouse stores have terrific, fresh and healthy selections. Avoid the kinds with tempura or sauces and go for the vegetarian or fish rolls featuring delicious avocado! The nice thing about sushi is that it’s relatively low in calories, too.

Guacamole – Make your own and serve it with fresh veggie sticks or baked tortilla chips. We like adding salsa fresca to our guacamole for extra veggie goodness!

Chopped salads – Who can resist a delicious salad with lots of chopped vegetables, hard boiled eggs, lean meats, nuts or seeds, and of course – Avocados from Mexico? Other chopped salad options could be bay shrimp, edamame, and even fruit like chopped apples or oranges! Add a light vinaigrette and serve in a whole wheat pita pocket to munch on during half time!

Shredded chicken taco bar – If you’re having a big crowd to watch the game on TV, create a serve-yourself taco bar complete with all the fixings including slices of Avocados from Mexico. You can easily prepare shredded chicken overnight in the slow cooker or for a late afternoon game, that morning.
