- Combine meat, onions, celery, carrots, tomato juice, sugar, salt and pepper and basil in a 2 1/2 qt casserole, cover tightly and cook in a slow oven about 300 degrees for 2 1/2 hrs. Stir potatoes into stew and continue cooking, covered 1 hour or possibly till meat and vegetables are done, stirring occasionally. Makes 8 servings.
