  • 1 env active dry yeast - (1/4 ounce)
  • 1 c. hot water (100 to 110 degrees)
  • 1/2 c. sugar divided
  • 5 c. bread flour
  • 1 jar anise seeds - (2.3 ounce)
  • 6 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 lrg Large eggs
  • 1/4 tsp salt

  1. Stir together yeast, 1 c. hot water, and 2 Tbsp. sugar in a 2-c. liquid measuring c.; let stand 5 min.
  2. Stir together remaining 6 Tbsp. sugar, flour, and next 4 ingredients in bowl of a heavy-duty electric stand mixer. Add in yeast mix, and beat at medium speed with electric mixer, using dough hook attachment, 6 min.
  3. Divide dough into 12 equal portions. Shape each portion into a round loaf, and place on 3 lightly greased baking sheets (4 loaves per baking sheet).
  4. Cover and let rise in a hot place (85 degrees), free from drafts, 2 to 3 hrs or possibly till doubled in bulk.
  5. Bake at 425 degrees for 8 to 10 min or possibly till golden. Cold on baking sheets on wire racks.
  6. This recipe yields 1 dozen.
  7. Comments: These small, sweet loaves have a texture similar to which of kaiser rolls.
