%20I%20found%20the%201950%20Gourmet%20Magazine%20Cookbook%20and%20the%20second%20Volume,%20from%201957.%20Since%20the%20magazine%20was%20so%20cruelly%20taken%20away%20from%20us,%20I%20was%20doubly%20excited%20to%20find%20these%20books%20intact%20and%20available%20to%20me%20at%20such%20a%20reasonable%20price!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBoth%20volumes%20are%20pretty%20beat%20up,%20but%20still%20in%20good%20working%20order%20-%20I%20don't%20do%20a%20very%20good%20job%20of%20keeping%20my%20cookbooks%20clean,%20after%20all.%20This%20one%20also%20had%20a%20bunch%20of%20things%20between%20the%20pages,%20one%20magazine%20cutting%20with%20an%20apple%20pie%20recipe,%20a%20postcard%20with%20some%20notes%20on%20the%20back,%20and%20one%20little%20slip%20with%20notes%20about%20a%20day's%20worth%20of%20menus.%20Apparently%20they%20had%20oeuf%20au%20miroir%20for%20breakfast%20(p.%20503%20in%20Volume%20II)%20and%20Chinese%20fried%20rice%20(with%20either%20chicken%20or%20ham)%20for%20lunch.%20I'm%20also%20kind%20of%20obsessed%20with%20the%20handwriting%20on%20these%20notes.%20Relics%20of%20a%20kind.%20Was%20it%20some%20fifties-style%20optimistic%20and%20ambitious%20newlywed,%20planning%20menus%20for%20each%20menu?%20A%20man%20teaching%20himself%20to%20cook?%20Who%20owned%20these%20books%20before?%20I'm%20especially%20intrigued%20because%20there's%20no%20inscription!%20(This%20is%20why%20I%20always%20write%20my%20name%20in%20my%20books.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThese%20books%20are%20full%20of%20all%20sorts%20of%20old%20school%20images%20and%20recipes%20that%20I%20think%20(it's%20safe%20to%20say)%20have%20fallen%20somewhat%20out%20of%20favor.%20The%20chapter%20titles%20are%20charming%20and%20hilarious.%20My%20favorite%20(above)%20is%20Man's%20Meat.%20The%20Scottish%20poem%20just%20below%20the%20meaty%20illustration%20also%20makes%20me%20smile.%20More%20lovely%20chapter%20titles%20below.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20then%20there%20are%20the%20full%20color%20illustrations.%20Some%20look%20good%20(Black%20Bean%20Soup,%20Cr%C3%AApes%20Suzette,%20Chocolate%20Cake%20Florence)%20and%20others%20are,%20well,%20glazed%20meat.%20In%20this%20most%20disgusting%20example,%20Cold%20Glazed%20Ox%20Tongue.%20It%20has%20flower%20shapes%20cut%20out%20of,%20I%20believe,%20ham.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20any%20case,%20expect%20to%20hear%20more%20about%20this%20book.%20At%20some%20point,%20I'm%20going%20to%20start%20cooking%20out%20of%20it%20-%20none%20of%20the%20more%20exotic%20meats%20and%20certainly%20no%20aspic%20in%20the%20near%20future%20-%20but%20I%20do%20want%20to%20try%20some%20of%20these%20recipes!%20I'll%20keep%20you%20posted.%20(More%20images%20of%20the%20books%20here.)I'll%20leave%20you%20with%20a%20favorite%20cookbook-reading%20guilty%20pleasure:%20biscuits%20(the%20kind%20from%20a%20can)%20with%20honey%20and%20butter.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
