It's Friday afternoon and the sun is shining through the fiery autumn trees. Cozy downtown Newington is quiet but for the chirping of a massive flock of birds, the rustling of leaves on the cobblestone sidewalk and the rumble of a few cars that roll by. Most people are still at work; it's barely 4 p.m. after all. The sun is warm on my face and I sit alone at the table outside, perusing the Rooster Co. menu, waiting for Chris to join me for an early dinner.

,%20expecting%20that%20the%20medium%20body,%20light%20tannins%20and%20juiciness%20will%20pair%20nicely%20with%20the%20chicken%20dish%20I%20plan%20to%20order.%20(I'm%20right.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EClams%20Casino%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChris%20had%20Halloween%20Buffet%20at%20his%20school%20today,%20so%20he's%20not%20starving%20like%20I%20am.%20I%20eat%20a%20teacher's%20lunch%20at%2010:30%20a.m.,%20so%20by%204%20I%20can%20start%20to%20feel%20%22hangry.%22%20And%20since%20I've%20been%20here%20longer,%20I%20know%20exactly%20what%20I%20want.%20I%20order%20the%20clams%20casino%20appetizer%20while%20Chris%20gets%20the%20cheese%20plate.%20My%20six%20littlenecks%20are%20plated%20beautifully,%20resting%20on%20bright%20green%20rock%20salt,%20and%20the%20color%20has%20my%20curiosity%20piqued.%20While%20the%20clams%20themselves%20are%20slightly%20overcooked,%20I%20love%20the%20flavors%20-%20smoky%20bacon%20and%20crunchy%20garlicky%20breadcrumbs,%20with%20a%20pinch%20of%20lemon%20zest%20adding%20a%20citrusy%20zing%20that%20reminds%20me%20of%20summer%20steamers.%20The%20cheese%20plate,%20made%20with%20three%20local(ish)%20cheeses%20(VT%20cheddar,%20NY%20camembert,%20MA%20bleu),%20comes%20with%20thin,%20crispy%20breadsticks,%20and%20pistachio%20honey.%20Each%20cheese%20is%20packed%20with%20such%20pungency,%20each%20so%20different%20from%20the%20others,%20it's%20an%20intriguing%20selection.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECheese%20Plate%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChris%20orders%20some%20local%20oysters%20that%20are%20served%20with%20a%20brightly%20acidic%20pink%20peppercorn%20mignonette.%20Then%20my%20%22Chef's%20Plate%22%20of%20chicken%20arrives%20and%20I%20can't%20wait%20to%20dig%20in.%20It%20looks%20and%20smells%20like%20Sunday%20dinner,%20only%20a%20bit%20fancier%20-%201/2%20rotisserie%20chicken,%20chicken%20leg%20confit%20(served%20on%20bruschetta),%20chicken%20pate%20(that's%20for%20Chris),%20and%20cracklin'%20(that's%20all%20mine).%20These%20are%20accompanied%20by%20a%20dollop%20of%20something%20akin%20to%20ginger-apple%20marmalade%20and%20a%20warm,%20crusty%20roll.%20The%20rotisserie%20is%20served%20with%20a%20choice%20of%20sauces,%20and%20the%20server%20suggests%20the%20walnut%20herb.%20Like%20nearly%20everyone%20on%20the%20planet,%20I%20love%20herbs%20with%20chicken,%20and%20this%20olive-oil%20based%20dipping%20sauce%20is%20definitely%20something%20I%20will%20attempt%20at%20home.%20The%20chicken%20itself%20is%20moist%20and%20juicy%20and%20the%20cracklin'%20shatters%20in%20my%20mouth.%20God,%20I%20love%20crispy%20chicken%20skin!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChef's%20Plate%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI'm%20so%20focused%20on%20my%20plate%20that%20it%20takes%20me%20some%20time%20to%20notice%20that%20the%20sun%20is%20barely%20peeking%20through%20the%20tree%20branches%20now,%20and%20without%20it,%20I'm%20getting%20chilly.%20The%20traffic%20will%20be%20bad%20if%20we%20wait%20much%20longer%20before%20we%20leave,%20so%20I%20ask%20for%20a%20box%20(they%20are%20biodegradable!)%20to%20take%20home%20what%20little%20is%20left%20of%20my%20platter.%20I'll%20heat%20it%20up%20for%20lunch%20tomorrow,%20I%20think,%20since%20Chris%20won't%20be%20home.%20I%20hope%20that%20the%20skin%20on%20the%20drumstick%20and%20that%20last%20cracklin'%20will%20crisp%20up%20in%20the%20broiler.%20(They%20do.)%20We%20pay%20the%20check,%20thank%20the%20server,%20and%20promise%20to%20return.%20For%20comfort%20food%20this%20interesting%20that's%20also%20happens%20to%20be%20made%20with%20local%20ingredients,%20who%20wouldn't?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOysters%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERooster%20Co.%20is%20located%20at%201076%20Main%20Street,%20Newington,%20CT.%20They%20serve%20lunch,%20dinner%20and%20Sunday%20brunch,%20along%20with%20daily%20specials%20and%20a%20kids'%20menu.%20News,%20events,%20menus,%20and%20recipes%20can%20be%20found%20on%20their%20website:%20http://www.roostercompany.net/.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECozy%20Downtown%20Newington%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(View%20from%20Rooster%20Co.)%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
