Every once in a while moms and dads need to get away on their own. Toss in a romantic, ancient yet modern locale, a mega yacht, Italian wine for lunch and you have one dream vacation. Such was my reality just last week.
Some 22 hours and 6,000 miles after leaving home our spirits soared as our Boeing 767 lightly touched down at Rome's Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport. Passing immigration was a breeze and both pieces of our luggage landed down the ramp almost immediately. Stepping outside, our prearranged ride was waiting and in no time we were zipping through the Italian motorway on our way to our "Home in Rome", the Amaranto Romano.

,%20the%20snack%20area,%20day%20room%20in%20our%20room%20(this%20was%20my%20favorite%20place%20to%20sit%20and%20review%20photos%20from%20the%20day!),%20Nadia%20and%20me,%20and%20our%20beds.With%20restaurant%20recommendations%20in%20hand%20my%20husband%20and%20I%20fought%20through%20our%20desire%20to%20lay%20our%20heads%20on%20the%20fluffy%20pillows%20and%20instead%20headed%20out%20to%20explore%20the%20city.%20%20Siesta,%20not%20something%20that%20we%20are%20used%20to%20here%20in%20San%20Diego,%20is%20something%20to%20take%20note%20of%20as%20many%20of%20the%20restaurants%20and%20shops%20in%20Italy%20close%20for%20the%20afternoon%20only%20to%20reopen%20in%20the%20early%20evening.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDiscovering%20a%20delightful%20restaurant,%20Gli%20Angeletti%20Ristorante,%20only%20a%20few%20blocks%20away%20we%20ordered%20the%20most%20Italian%20thing%20we%20could%20think%20of%20and%20within%20minutes%20a%201/2%20liter%20of%20red%20wine%20arrived%20accompanied%20by%20a%20plateful%20of%20Bruschetta%20and%20a%20pail%20of%20Italian%20Salamis.%20%20Toasting%20the%20beginning%20of%20our%20vacation%20we%20clinked%20our%20glasses,%20smiled%20with%20anticipation%20and%20dug%20in%20to%20our%20first%20real%20meal%20in%2024%20hours.%20%20Fresh%20flavors%20of%20tomato,%20local%20olive%20oil%20and%20spices%20had%20us%20gushing%20to%20no%20end%20and%20fully%20enjoying%20our%20first%20taste%20of%20Italy.%20%20Thin%20slices%20of%20salami%20topped%20the%20remaining%20bread%20and%20we%20leaned%20back,%20already%20content.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMinutes%20later%20more%20Italian%20delights%20were%20delivered%20in%20the%20form%20of%20steaming,%20cheesy%20lasagna.%20%20Choosing%20two%20different%20varieties%20to%20share%20we%20smiled%20with%20pleasure%20at%20our%20first%20bites%20and%20knew%20we%20were%20not%20in%20San%20Diego%20any%20more.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDinner%20finished%20and%20with%20the%20sun%20setting,%20we%20made%20our%20way%20in%20the%20direction%20of%20one%20of%20Rome's%20most%20recognized%20sites,%20the%20Colosseum.%20%20With%20vehicles%20zipping%20past%20at%20amazing%20speeds%20we%20took%20care%20to%20cross%20the%20streets%20teeming%20with%20scooters,%20motorcycles%20and%20cars%20as%20we%20made%20our%20way%20across%20the%20cobblestones.%20%20Turning%20the%20corner%20of%20a%20busy%20street%20we%20both%20gasped%20in%20awe%20as%20the%20street%20ended%20in%20the%20glow%20of%20the%20ancient%20Colosseum%20bathed%20in%20the%20golden%20hues%20of%20the%20setting%20sun.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20think%20this%20is%20when%20it%20really%20hit%20us%20that%20we%20were%20genuinelty%20in%20the%20Eternal%20City.%20%20Meandering%20around%20the%20site%20we%20took%20in%20the%20arena%20as%20well%20as%20the%20Arch%20of%20Constantine%20which%20is%20situated%20between%20the%20Colosseum%20and%20Palatine%20Hill.%20%20Fantastic%20structures%20in%20an%20amazing%20setting.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWith%20the%20sun%20dipping%20below%20the%20horizon%20we%20made%20our%20way%20back%20through%20the%20busy%20streets%20just%20as%20most%20of%20the%20locals%20were%20headed%20out%20for%20the%20evening.%20%20Back%20at%20the%20Amaranto%20Romano%20we%20finally%20laid%20our%20tired%20and%20jet%20lagged%20heads%20on%20those%20inviting%20pillows%20with%20dreams%20of%20gladiators%20and%20Italian%20wine%20soon%20to%20follow.%20%20Tomorrow%20the%20Colosseum%20would%20be%20ours%20along%20with%20an%20eagerly%20anticipated%20tour%20of%20the%20Roman%20Forum.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
