,%20my%20brother's%20house%20is%20a%20sea%20of%20easy-to-clean%20wooden%20floors.%20%20While%20my%20house%20tends%20to%20be%20a%20quiet%20and%20serene%20space%20(other%20than%20the%20occasional%20burst%20of%20The%20Killers%20or%20My%20Chemical%20Romance%20turned%20up%20loud%20as%20I%20cook!),%20his%20rings%20out%20with%20the%20sounds%20of%20dogs,%20cats%20and%20two%20very%20busy%20boys%20acting%20out%20scenes%20from%20Star%20Wars,%20building%20Lego%20spaceships,%20or%20playing%20hide%20and%20seek.%20I%20love%20staying%20there%20because%20it%20is%20a%20world%20so%20alien%20to%20the%20one%20I%20inhabit%20in%20London,%20and%20because%20it%20has%20meant%20that%20my%20nephews%20view%20me%20companionably%20as%20part%20of%20the%20furniture,%20despite%20the%20fact%20that%20I%20live%20on%20another%20continent.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20morning%20last%20month%20I%20was%20busy%20at%20the%20house,%20moving%20some%20books%20around%20and%20lost%20in%20thought,%20whistling%20along%20to%20the%20radio%20as%20I%20worked.%20Suddenly%20I%20got%20the%20feeling%20I%20was%20being%20watched.%20%20I%20looked%20down%20to%20see%20Spotty%20(my%20nephew%20Sam's%20much-loved%20%22Heinz%2057%20varieties%22%20dog)%20standing%20transfixed,%20staring%20at%20me%20with%20that%20peculiar%20cock%20of%20the%20head%20that%20indicates%20a%20dog's%20curiosity%20and%20total%20fascination%20with%20something.%20At%20first%20I%20thought%20she%20was%20looking%20at%20something%20behind%20me%20and%20turned%20around%20to%20look%20-%20but%20no,%20nothing%20there.%20%20And%20by%20the%20time%20I%20turned%20back%20again%20she%20had%20lost%20interest%20and%20turned%20to%20wander%20out%20of%20the%20room.%20%20So%20I%20carried%20on%20working%20and%20re-commenced%20whistling,%20upon%20which%20Spotty%20instantly%20returned%20with%20the%20same%20look.%20%20Slowly%20it%20dawned%20on%20me%20that%20she%20was%20not%20looking%20at%20me%20-%20she%20was%20listening%20to%20me.%20Although%20I%20regard%20whistling%20as%20something%20totally%20mundane%20that%20I%20learnt%20to%20do%20from%20my%20dad%20and%20do%20almost%20every%20day,%20almost%20unconsciously,%20it's%20a%20rarity%20in%20my%20brother's%20house.%20%20Because%20although%20my%20brother%20can%20throw%20a%20ball%20better%20than%20me,%20is%20one%20of%20the%20few%20people%20who%20can%20beat%20me%20at%20Trivial%20Pursuit%20(occasionally!)%20and%20can%20turn%20the%20tip%20of%20his%20tongue%20upside%20down%20without%20using%20his%20fingers%20(!)...%20he%20can't%20whistle.%20%20So%20whistling%20is%20simply%20something%20Spotty%20has%20not%20come%20across%20in%20her%20databank%20of%20household%20noises.%20%20Ain't%20genetics%20a%20bitch?%20;)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20Hungary,%20mothers%20at%20their%20wits'%20end%20with%20vegetable-phobic%20kids%20have%20devised%20a%20legend%20to%20try%20and%20persuade%20their%20children%20to%20eat%20carrots.%20%20According%20to%20the%20legend,%20Hungarian%20moms%20would%20tell%20their%20offspring%20to%20eat%20up%20all%20their%20carrots%20because%20carrots%20make%20you%20good%20at%20whistling.%20%20The%20%22theory%22%20(I%20use%20the%20term%20loosely!)%20is%20that%20because%20carrots%20are%20pretty%20firm,%20chewing%20them%20gives%20your%20facial%20muscles%20a%20workout%20and%20strengthens%20them,%20thus%20making%20you%20a%20better%20whistler.%20%20And%20because%20all%20kids%20think%20whistling%20is%20cool,%20they%20would%20chow%20down%20on%20those%20carrots.%20%20Eventually,%20though,%20kids%20realised%20that%20carrots%20do%20nothing%20of%20the%20sort%20-%20but%20by%20then%20it%20was%20too%20late%20and%20the%20carrots%20were%20eaten.%20%20Strangely%20enough,%20carrots%20were%20the%20one%20vegetable%20that%20I%20never%20needed%20any%20persuasion%20to%20eat%20as%20a%20child%20-%20so%20maybe%20there%20is%20something%20to%20this%20whistling%20thing%20after%20all?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20soup%20will%20give%20your%20jaws%20very%20little%20exercise,%20will%20do%20even%20less%20for%20your%20whistling%20prowess,%20but%20will%20delight%20your%20tastebuds%20(if%20you%20are%20a%20fan%20of%20coriander/cilantro!).%20%20Carrots%20and%20coriander%20are%20a%20classic%20flavour%20combination,%20and%20roasting%20them%20together%20first%20brings%20a%20depth%20of%20flavour%20to%20the%20soup%20that's%20hard%20to%20achieve%20by%20simply%20boiling%20or%20steaming%20the%20carrots.%20%20I%20love%20the%20mellow%20flavour%20of%20the%20carrots%20brightened%20up%20by%20the%20cilantro,%20I%20love%20the%20sunny%20colour,%20and%20I%20love%20how%20super-easy%20it%20is.%20%20And%20if%20that%20does%20not%20make%20you%20whistle%20with%20joy,%20nothing%20will!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EROASTED%20CARROT%20AND%20CORIANDER%20SOUP%20(serves%204)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMethod:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPre-heat%20the%20oven%20to%20180C%20and%20line%20a%20baking%20tray%20with%20aluminium%20foil.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPeel%20the%20carrots,%20cut%20each%20in%20half%20along%20its%20length%20and%20chop%20into%202.5cm%20lengths.%20%20Peel%20and%20roughly%20chop%20the%20onion.%20%20Toss%20the%20carrots,%20onion%20and%20unpeeled%20garlic%20cloves%20together%20with%20enough%20olive%20oil%20to%20coat%20them,%20then%20spread%20out%20evenly%20on%20the%20baking%20tray.%20Crush%20the%20coriander%20seeds%20using%20a%20pestle%20and%20mortar,%20sprinkle%20over%20the%20vegetables%20and%20bake%20for%20about%2045%20minutes%20or%20until%20carrots%20are%20soft%20and%20beginning%20to%20caramelise.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20the%20carrots%20are%20soft%20enough%20to%20mash%20roughly%20with%20a%20fork,%20remove%20the%20vegetables%20from%20the%20oven,%20set%20aside%20the%20garlic%20cloves%20and%20tip%20the%20rest%20into%20a%20large%20heavy-bottomed%20pot.%20Squeeze%20the%20garlic%20flesh%20out%20of%20the%20skins%20and%20add%20to%20the%20pot,%20then%20mash%20the%20vegetables%20roughly%20using%20a%20potato%20masher.%20%20Add%20the%20coriander/cilantro%20leaves,%20stock%20and%20milk%20and%20then%20mix%20with%20an%20immersion%20blender%20until%20the%20soup%20is%20as%20smooth%20or%20as%20chunky%20as%20you%20like.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESimmer%20over%20medium%20heat%20until%20heated%20through.%20%20Add%20more%20water%20if%20the%20soup%20is%20too%20thick,%20check%20for%20seasoning%20and%20add%20salt%20and%20pepper%20as%20necessary.%20%20Garnish%20with%20thin%20carrot%20ribbons%20(use%20your%20vegetable%20peeler%20to%20make%20them)%20and%20fresh%20coriander/cilantro%20leaves,%20and%20serve%20immediately.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
