- 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
- 1/2 medium carrot, peeled and finely diced
- 1 medium rib celery, finely diced
- 1 lb. ground pork
- 1/2 lb. thinly sliced prosciutto de Parma, very finely diced
- freshly ground black pepper (no salt is added because of the saltiness of the chicken broth and Parmesan cheese)
- 1/2 cup dry white wine
- 1 tablespoon fresh basil, chopped
- 1 (28 oz.) can Italian plum tomatoes with their juices
- 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
- 1/2 cup hot milk
- 1 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
