,%20but%20then%20we%20found%20out%20a%20few%20weeks%20ago%20that%20cable%20won%E2%80%99t%20be%20an%20option%20at%20our%20new%20place.%20So%20while%20Michael%20is%20rejoicing%20at%20the%20thought%20of%20no%20more%20weekend%20mornings%20dominated%20by%20the%20Food%20Network,%20I%E2%80%99m%20bummed%20that%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20fangirl%20over%20my%20two%20new%20favorites%20each%20week.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOh%20well%E2%80%94at%20least%20I%20have%20cookbooks%20and%20online%20recipes%20to%20get%20me%20through%20this%20transition.%20It%20also%20helps%20that%20both%20shows%20have%20had%20their%20episodes%20in%20reruns,%20so%20at%20the%20very%20least%20I%E2%80%99ve%20been%20able%20to%20see%20them%20many%20times%20already%20and%20written%20down%20notes%20to%20any%20recipe%20that%20has%20caught%20my%20fancy%20well%20before%20we%20have%20to%20disconnect%20and%20mail%20back%20the%20cable%20box.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERachel%20Khoo%20herself.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERachel%20was%20the%20first%20of%20the%20two%20hosts%20to%20cross%20my%20radar%20as%20I%20first%20caught%20an%20episode%20from%20her%20first%20series%20set%20in%20Paris%20and%20then%20proceeded%20to%20record%20every%20episode%20of%20Kitchen%20Notebook:%20London.%20At%20first%20glance%20it%E2%80%99s%20tempting%20to%20write%20her%20off%20as%20a%20sort%20of%20twee%20hipster%20cycling%20around%20London%20in%20pretty%20dresses,%20but%20because%20this%20isn%E2%80%99t%20a%20Food%20Network%20show,%20it%20becomes%20overwhelmingly%20clear%20while%20watching%20any%20one%20episode%20for%20the%20first%20time%20that%20her%20style,%20personality,%20or%20anything%20else%20is%20treated%20as%20a%20gimmick.%20It%E2%80%99s%20the%20same%20with%20Lorraine%E2%80%94I%20feel%20like%20we%E2%80%99d%20be%20endlessly%20reminded%20that%20she%20was%20a%20former%20model%20at%20every%20turn%20even%20though%20it%20has%20absolutely%20nothing%20to%20do%20with%20her%20show.%20Thankfully,%20the%20BBC%20is%20smart%20to%20focus%20on%20each%20woman%E2%80%99s%20approach%20to%20food,%20and%20both%20shows%20are%20much%20better%20for%20it.%20Any%20mentions%20of%20family%20or%20background%20come%20up%20pretty%20naturally%20in%20a%20monologue%20and%20aren%E2%80%99t%20milked%20for%20maximum%20emotional%20effect.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20also%20helps%20that%20her%20premise%20is%20one%20that%E2%80%99s%20really%20loose%20and%20flexible%20and%20handily%20ties%20in%20the%20%E2%80%9Cman%20on%20the%20street%E2%80%9D%20segments%20to%20her%20kitchen%20cookery%20moments.%20Since%20she%E2%80%99s%20talking%20to%20all%20kinds%20of%20people%E2%80%94fellow%20home%20cooks,%20street%20food%20vendors,%20as%20well%20as%20restaurant%20people%E2%80%94all%20of%20the%20interactions%20feel%20far%20more%20natural%20and%20less%20like%20non-cooking%20filler.%20You%E2%80%99d%20be%20amazed%20how%20hard%20it%20is%20to%20find%20a%20show%20that%20is%20able%20to%20strike%20that%20balance.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOf%20course,%20the%20main%20reason%20this%20show%20works%20is%20because%20it%20features%20so%20many%20tasty-looking%20dishes.%20In%20fact,%20one%20of%20the%20few%20issues%20I%20have%20with%20the%20show%20is%20that%20only%20one%20recipe%20per%20episode%20is%20available%20online%20for%20now%20and%20her%20cookbook%20for%20the%20show%20has%20yet%20to%20have%20a%20US%20publication%20date.%20Boo.%20In%20the%20meantime%20though%20I%20can%20make%20do%20with%20my%20questionable%20transcriptions%20of%20what%20she%20demonstrates%20on%20air%20as%20well%20as%20her%20cookbook%20The%20Little%20Paris%20Kitchen.%20While%20the%20latter%20has%20a%20French%20bent,%20it%E2%80%99s%20clearly%20meant%20to%20be%20an%20accessible%20and%20therefore%20modern%20take%20on%20French%20food,%20and%20so%20far%20every%20recipe%20I%E2%80%99ve%20tried%20from%20has%20turned%20out%20quite%20delicious.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOne%20of%20the%20most%20notable%20has%20been%20this%20chicken%20liver%20and%20fig%20salad%20recipe%20seen%20above%E2%80%A6only%20admittedly%20I%20used%20Italian%20plums%20because%20figs%20were%20not%20available%20when%20I%20wanted%20to%20make%20it,%20but%20in%20the%20end%20it%20worked%20out%20nicely.%20Chicken%20liver%20is%20hard%20to%20cook%20properly,%20but%20thankfully%20it%E2%80%99s%20cheap%20enough%20to%20practice%20on%20that%20it%20makes%20it%20worthwhile%20to%20give%20it%20a%20few%20tries%20to%20get%20it%20right.%20Rachel%20advises%20only%20searing%20it%20and%20she%E2%80%99s%20right%20to%20do%20so%20as%20liver%20benefits%20from%20fast%20cooking%20and%20a%20bit%20of%20pink%20in%20the%20middle.%20The%20richness%20of%20the%20liver%20balances%20well%20with%20the%20crispness%20of%20the%20lettuce%20and%20the%20sweet%20tartness%20of%20the%20plums%20and%20it%20all%20works%20well%20as%20a%20starter%20or%20as%20a%20light%20lunch.%20It%E2%80%99s%20one%20I%E2%80%99m%20looking%20forward%20to%20tweaking%20for%20lunches%20in%20the%20future,%20especially%20figuring%20out%20which%20seasonal%20fruits%20work%20best%20in%20this%20recipe.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESalad%20of%20Chicken%20Livers%20and%20Italian%20Plums%3C/p%3E%
