Last month the family and I had a chance to spend the day Portland, Maine. We walked around the town and hit up several spots that will certainly appeal to foodies looking for something unique to experience or purchase to take home.
Duck Fat
Arriving at bit after lunch time, I wanted to avoid the usual fried seafood joints off Portland’s main drag, and headed over to Duck Fat. I’d read about Duck Fat online and liked their angle. They use clarified duck fat in many of their amazing dishes from milkshakes to duck fat fried French fries.

.%20It%E2%80%99s%20topped%20with%20an%20egg%20and%20gravy%20if%20you%20wish.%20(I%20asked%20for%20my%20gravy%20on%20the%20side.%20The%20runny%20egg%20was%20plenty%20and%20the%20gravy,%20while%20lovely,%20would%20have%20been%20over%20the%20top.)%20The%20Poutine%20comes%20in%20an%20individual%20(small)%20portion%20or%20a%20large%20one%20that%20can%20be%20shared%20among%20several%20people.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20tried%20one%20of%20their%20craft%20sodas,%20an%20All%20Maine%20Tonic%20made%20with%20apple%20cider%20vinegar,%20which%20helped%20cut%20the%20heaviness%20of%20lunch.%20It%20was%20perfect%20because%20the%20kids%20and%20I%20ended%20the%20meal%20with%20an%20order%20of%20duck%20fat%20fried%20donut%20holes%20sprinkled%20in%20powdered%20sugar.%20We%20dipped%20ours%20into%20a%20duck%20fat%20chocolate%20and%20caramel%20syrup,%20but%20agreed%20the%20chocolate%20was%20best.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20we%20thought%20our%20lunch%20at%20Duck%20Fat%20was%20delicious,%20it%20certainly%20was%20heavy.%20So%20plan%20to%20do%20a%20bit%20of%20walking%20to%20burn%20it%20off%20after%20lunch.%20Also,%20when%20we%20showed%20up%20at%201%20pm,%20we%20had%20a%20half%20hour%20wait.%20By%20the%20time%20we%20were%20seated%20(we%20had%20to%20share%20a%20table%20with%20another%20family%20as%20the%20restaurant%20is%20small%20and%20seating%20is%20limited)%20the%20wait%20was%2090%20minutes.%20The%20reason?%20Duck%20Fat%20was%20recently%20written%20up%20in%20Food%20&%20Wine%20magazine%20by%20Andrew%20Zimmerman%20of%20Travel%20Channel%E2%80%99s%20Bizarre%20Foods.%20He%20loved%20it%20as%20much%20as%20we%20did!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDuck%20Fat%20%E2%80%93%2043%20Middle%20Street,%20Portland,%20Maine%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELeRoux%20Kitchen%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20love%20looking%20at%20wonderful%20cookware,%20glassware,%20table%20linens,%20cookbooks%20and%20more,%20you%20could%20spend%20hours%20just%20poking%20around%20LeRoux%20Kitchen.%20It%E2%80%99s%20located%20right%20on%20the%20waterfront%20in%20the%20heart%20of%20the%20Old%20Port,%20so%20it%E2%80%99s%20easy%20to%20stop%20by%20on%20your%20way%20to%20seeing%20anything%20in%20Portland.%20Unfortunately,%20the%20kids%20were%20not%20as%20enchanted%20as%20I%20was,%20so%20I%20could%20only%20spend%20a%20few%20minutes%20looking%20around%20before%20I%20got%20the,%20%E2%80%9COh%20Mom,%20I%E2%80%99m%20bored.%E2%80%9D%20look.%20Next%20time,%20I%E2%80%99ll%20send%20them%20off%20somewhere%20on%20their%20own%20so%20I%20can%20browse!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELeRoux%20Kichen%20%E2%80%93%20161%20Commercial%20Street,%20Portland,%20Maine%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBam%20Bam%20Bakery%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBam%20Bam%20Bakery%20is%20a%20coffee%20house%20and%20bakery%20and%20their%20selection%20of%20gluten%20free%20goodies%20is%20impressive:%20cakes,%20pastries,%20breaks,%20cookies,%20cinnamon%20rolls,%20pies,%20quiche%20and%20more.%20You%20can%20also%20get%20breakfast%20and%20lunch%20there,%20too.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20ordered%20a%20huge%20slice%20of%20scone%20to%20go%20that%20lasted%20me%20for%20two%20breakfasts.%20It%20was%20not%20only%20delicious%20but%20moist.%20I%20wish%20I%20lived%20closer.%20Than%20again,%20maybe%20my%20waistline%20does%20not!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBam%20Bam%20Bakery%20%E2%80%93%20267%20Commercial%20Street,%20Portland,%20Maine%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESalt%20Cellar%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Salt%20Cellar%20sells%20flavored%20finishing%20salts,%20Himalayan%20salt%20tiles,%20bath%20salts,%20and%20salt%20lamps.%20The%20store%20in%20Portland%20is%20also%20home%20to%20he%20largest%20Himalayan%20salt%20lamp%20in%20North%20America%20weighing%20in%20at%20nearly%20500%20pounds!%20The%20kids%20and%20I%20had%20a%20fun%20time%20trying%20out%20all%20the%20finishing%20salts.%20I%20ended%20up%20buying%20several%20types%20including%20merlot,%20sriracha%20and%20an%20applewood%20smoked%20salt.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhat%20really%20intrigued%20me%20was%20the%20Himalayan%20salt%20blocks%20for%20salt%20block%20cooking.%20While%20I%20didn%E2%80%99t%20buy%20a%20slab%20(I%20really%20thought%20it%20would%20be%20a%20nightmare%20to%20take%20home),%20I%20did%20buy%20Himalayan%20Shot%20Glasses%20for%20tequila%20and%20Salty%20Swizzler%20Sticks%20for%20Bloody%20Marys.%20You%20can%20buy%20the%20salts%20and%20salt%20block%20cooking%20accessories%20through%20the%20Salt%20Cellar%E2%80%99s%20online%20store.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESalt%20Cellar%20%E2%80%93%20172%20Middle%20Street,%20Portland,%20Maine%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStonewall%20Kitchen%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20may%20only%20know%20Stonewall%20Kitchen%20from%20their%20catalogs,%20but%20they%20have%20stores,%20too.%20There%E2%80%99s%20one%20in%20Portland%20where%20they%20offer%20demonstration%20cooking%20classes%20in%20the%20evenings.%20You%20can%20also%20go%20in%20and%20sample%20their%20jams%20and%20dips,%20pick%20up%20a%20few%20free%20recipe%20cards,%20get%20a%20free%20SWK%20%E2%80%9CNo%20toast%20should%20go%20naked%E2%80%9D%20bumper%20sticker,%20and%20buy%20the%20cutest%20Maine%20dishtowels%20sold%20in%20Portland.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStonewall%20Kitchen%20%E2%80%93%20182%20Middle%20Street,%20Portland,%20Maine%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Old%20Port%20House%20of%20Jerky%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20kids%20have%20been%20bugging%20me%20to%20get%20them%20jerky%20for%20ages,%20so%20when%20I%20saw%20the%20North%20Conway%20House%20of%20Jerky%20I%20thought%20we%E2%80%99d%20stop%20by%20and%20get%20some%20snacks%20for%20the%20plane%20ride%20home.%20I%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20disappointed%20as%20they%20had%20a%20variety%20to%20fit%20everyone%E2%80%99s%20tastes.%20They%20even%20have%20vegan%20and%20gluten%20free%20products!%20We%20visited%20their%20store%20in%20Portland,%20but%20their%20main%20store%E2%80%99s%20in%20North%20Conway,%20New%20Hampshire.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBoth%20children%20kept%20their%20jerky%20for%20the%20trip%20home%20and%20while%20Lucie%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20happy%20with%20her%20flavor%20choice,%20Nathan%20thought%20both%20were%20fantastic.%20I%20had%20samples%20of%20each%20and%20unlike%20the%20jerky%20you%20get%20at%20the%20store,%20it%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20too%20dried%20out%20and%20chewy.%20Good%20stuff%20for%20the%20price!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Old%20Port%20House%20of%20Jerky%20%E2%80%93%2013%20Exchange%20Street,%20Portland,%20Maine%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMore%20about%20Portland,%20Maine%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20find%20out%20more%20about%20what%20to%20do%20in%20the%20Old%20Port%20section%20of%20Portland,%20check%20out%20Portland%E2%80%99s%20Downtown%20District%20and%20the%20Public%20Market%20House.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
