- Figs were introduced to North America by Spanish Franciscan missionaries.
- Place whole figs in a single layer in large saucepan. In a medium bowl, whisk together zest, juice, and honey. Pour over figs, cover pan, and gently simmer till figs are softened, about 15 min- With a slotted spoon, remove figs and place in a medium bowl.
- In a small bowl or possibly c., dissolve cornstarch in water, whisk into simmering fruit syrup, and cook till syrup thickens, about 2 min. Stir in cloves, cinnamon, and Grand Mariner, if you like. Pour over figs and set aside to cold.
- Serve at room temperature, garnished with pecans, if you like.
