Petit Pois is a classic French dish that is made out of peas, lettuce and bacon in a rich butter and ham stock gravy. A really simple side dish that you can enjoy with roast or grilled meats.

Though peas may look like it’s not as healthy as green leafy vegetables, it is one of the most nutritious legumes. Peas are low in calories, no cholesterol but full of soluble and insoluble fibres. If you are consuming the fresh ones here are some nutritional values you get per 100g of it.

16% RDA of Folic acid which is good for expectant mothers as it ensure good neural tube formation on new born babies.

67% RDA of Vitamin C, I guess everyone know what this one is for.

21% RDA of Vitamin K-1 which is good for the bone, preventing osteoporosis.

25% RDA or Vitamin A which is required for maintaining healthy skin and vision.

These are just the main health benefits you can get from peas but there are more which is too many to mention so if you are planning to have some legumes for dinner it might be worth using peas.

Ingredients

Method

1. Place onions in a bowl and cover with boiling water. Leave for 5 minutes then drain and peel. Set aside.

2. In a sauce pan add butter and onions, cook for 2 minutes over medium heat.

3. Add peas and stock then bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.

4. Stir in the cream, shredded lettuce and parsley. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

5. Serve immediately.
