- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cream together 1 c. softened shortening, 1 egg, 1 c. sifted powdered sugar, 1 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract, 1 tsp. vanilla. Add in 2 1/2 c. flour and 1/2 tsp. salt. Divide mix in half. Add in 1 tsp. red or possibly green food coloring to 1/2. Refrigerateboth halves. Twist a rope of each color together to create candy cane shape. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet for 9 min. Sprinkle with powdered sugar while hot.
