,%20balsamic%20vinegar,%20sundried%20tomatoes%20and%20even%20EVOO%20were%20not%20known%20to%20us?%20%20%20%20%20What%20about%20the%20process%20and%20technique%20of%20cooking%20with%20wine?%20%20%20What%20if%20that%20was%20unheard%20of%20as%20well?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20would%20still%20be%20in%20the%20dark%20foodie%20ages%20eating%20for%20nourishment%20alone.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELet%E2%80%99s%20welcome%20the%20Enlightenment%20and%20all%20those%20who%20brought%20us%20out%20of%20the%20Dark%20Ages.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20current%20Cook%20the%20Books%20(CTB)%20Club%E2%80%99s%20selection%20is%20The%20United%20States%20of%20Arugula%20by%20David%20Kamp.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECTB%20is%20hosted%20by%20Rachel,%20Deb%20and%20Jo,%20%20and%20is%20a%20book%20club%20for%20the%20avid,%20ardent,%20impassioned,%20and%20zealous%20literary%20foodie.%20%20%20Everything%20we%20have%20read%20has%20been%20an%20awakening%20for%20me%20on%20some%20level.%20%20%20%20(Check%20out%20my%20older%20posts%20here.)%20%20%20%20This%20selection%20was%20no%20different.%20%20%20What%20an%20education%20provided%20by%20Kamp!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Unites%20States%20of%20Arugula%20%20chronicles%20the%20foodie%20heavy%20hitters%20that%20helped%20bring%20about%20the%20Golden%20Age%20of%20Cuisine%20in%20the%20U.S.%20%20(And%20more%20importantly,%20%20those%20that%20brought%20us%20goat%20cheese!)%20%20%20Although%20Kamp%20begins%20the%20discussion%20with%20the%20%E2%80%9Chumorless%20home-ec%20lady,%E2%80%9D%20Fannie%20Farmer,%20he%20hits%20every%20prominent%20foodie%20from%20our%20recent%20history:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJames%20Beard%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECraig%20Claiborne%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJulia%20Child%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlice%20Waters%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJeremiah%20Towers%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWolfgang%20Puck%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20many%20more!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECamp%20also%20focuses%20on%20many%20different%20movements%20and%20trends%20throughout%20our%20history%E2%80%94from%20our%20Francophile%20days,%20through%20the%20aforementioned%20Enlightenment,%20to%20the%20current%20trend%20in%20farm-to-table.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20thoroughly%20enjoyed%20this%20book,%20but%20seriously,%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20get%20pass%20the%20idea%20that%20I%20could%20have%20gone%20through%20life%20without%20goat%20cheese%20and%20dried%20tomatoes%20(and%20balsamic%20and%20EVOO)!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20in%20honor%20of%20David%20Kamp%20and%20The%20Unites%20States%20of%20Arugula%20and%20this%20selection%20for%20Cook%20the%20Books%20Club,%20I%20bring%20you%20smoked%20goat%20cheese.%20%20%20If%20you%20have%20never%20tried%20this,%20you%20must.%20%20%20Simply%20put,%20it%20is%20delicious.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFresh%20herbs%20(optional)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHeat%20grill/smoker.%20%20%20We%20have%20done%20this%20at%20300%20degrees%20for%2030%20minutes%20or%20at%20150-200%20degrees%20for%20one%20hour.%20%20%20It%20depends%20on%20what%20you%20have%20on%20the%20grill%20as%20you%20are%20doing%20this.%20%20%20(The%20more%20smoke%20chips%20the%20better.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20threw%20in%20two%20rosemary%20spears.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20cheese%20in%20an%20aluminum%20tray,%20drizzle%20with%20olive%20oil,%20and%20cover%20with%20pepper.%20%20%20You%20may%20place%20fresh%20herbs%20on%20top%20as%20well.%20%20%20(Discard%20herbs%20before%20serving.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20open%20tray%20in%20smoker%20and%20smoke%20until%20it%20is%20golden%20and%20smokey!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDiscard%20herbs.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EServe%20with%20crackers,%20pita%20wedges%20or%20toasts.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20original%20recipe%20for%20this%20excellent%20appetizer%20comes%20for%20Kate%20at%20Kate%E2%80%99s%20Kitchen.%20%20%20Please%20check%20out%20her%20recipe.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20on%20my%20own%20smoking%20this%20and%20I%20am%20not%20too%20adept%20at%20throwing%20in%20smoked%20chips.%20%20%20Ours%20is%20not%20so%20smokey%20but%20it%20is%20still%20good.%20Check%20out%20Kate%E2%80%99s%20for%20a%20beautiful%20smokey%20version.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20first%20attempt.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20traveled%20to%20my%20sister%E2%80%99s%20over%20the%20weekend%20too%20and%20we%20tried%20this%20again%20with%20some%20very%20smokey%20hickory%20chips%20for%20flavoring:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20really%20what%20it%20should%20look%20like.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAside:%20%20%20The%20nephew%20just%20called%20me%20to%20tell%20me%20that%20they%20threw%20the%20leftover%20smoked%20goat%20cheese%20in%20with%20some%20pasta,%20fresh%20snow%20peas%20from%20the%20garden,%20onions%20and%20olive%20oil.%20%20%20He%20said%20it%20was%20delicious%20lunch.%20%20%20Sadly,%20we%20were%20on%20the%20road%20and%20did%20not%20get%20to%20partake%20of%20this%20leftover%20deliciousness.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EKamp%E2%80%99s%20book%20was%20a%20great%20CTB%20pick%20and%20I%20told%20everyone%20I%20saw%20this%20holiday%20weekend%20about%20it!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20next%20Cook%20the%20Books%20Club%20%20was%20chosen%20by%20Rachel,%20one%20of%20the%20hosts.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERachel,%20The%20Crispy%20Cook,%20is%20having%20us%20put%20our%20foodie%20detective%20hats%20on%20for%20Death%20By%20Darjeeling%20%20(A%20Tea%20Shop%20Mystery)%20%20by%20Laura%20Childs.%20%20%20Rachel%20says,%20%E2%80%9CThis%20cozy%20mystery%20is%20the%20first%20in%20a%20series%20of%20(now%2013%20titles)%20books%20featuring%20Charleston,%20South%20Carolina%20tea%20shop%20owner%20Theodosia%20Browning.%20Theodosia%20and%20her%20employees%20at%20the%20Indigo%20Tea%20Shop%20offers%20a%20wealth%20of%20teas%20and%20baked%20goods%20to%20sample%20at%20the%20shop%20and%20at%20various%20catered%20events,%20including%20an%20evening%20tour%20of%20historic%20homes.%20When%20an%20unscrupulous%20real%20estate%20developer%20turns%20up%20dead%20at%20this%20Lamplighter%20Tour,%20clutching%20an%20empty%20tea%20cup%20that%20held%20poisoned%20tea,%20Theodosia%20goes%20sleuthing%20to%20track%20down%20the%20murder.%E2%80%9D%20%20The%20deadline%20for%20%E2%80%9CDeath%20By%20Darjeeling%E2%80%9D%20is%20Monday,%20July%2030th.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGrab%20this%20novel,%20which%20sounds%20like%20a%20good%20beach%20read%20to%20me%20and%20join%20CTB%20for%20the%20next%20posting.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
