- Stir sugar, salt and flour together in mixing bowl. Add in egg yolks, buttermilk, butter and vanilla. Blend well. In separate bowl, whip egg whites till moist peaks form, 1 minute. Fold beaten egg whites into buttermilk mix. Don't over-mix.
- Pour 1 qt (4 c.) buttermilk custard mix into unbaked pie shell. (Any remaining custard filling may be poured into c. and baked at 350 degrees till set, about 25 to 35 min.)
- Bake pie at 300 degrees till knife inserted in center comes out clean and top is crusty and golden, about 55 min to 1 hour.
