Kuchen

March recipes are all about getting back to our roots here at Carolina HeartStrings. Mine mainly being German/Russian I decided to begin with one of my favorite treats when I was a child. My maternal grandmother was of German/Russian descent. Born in Russia, she immigrated as a baby to the United States. She settled with her family in North Dakota in a community largely made up of relatives and other immigrants like herself. The meals that were prepared were typical German dishes, all from scratch, never using a recipe. I found her recipe on a card that I had copied down when I was very young. When I started looking at it, I was not all that sure I could follow the directions and realized that the quantities were very large, so I halved them all. I was not at all sure it would have a successful outcome. But it did! And it was delicious! It brought back some wonderful memories when I tasted it!

Ингредиенты

  • 2 packets dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 4 cups flour
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon lemon extract
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Инструкции

  1. Grease one 9 x 13 pan or two 9 inch cake pans with butter. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Warm the 1/2 cup water. Sprinkle yeast over the water. Stir gently to make sure the yeast is evenly distributed in the water. Set aside. Mix the milk, sugar, salt and butter in a saucepan. Heat until the butter is melted and the sugar is dissolved. Cool slightly (until mixture is lukewarm). Add the dissolved yeast mixture. Stir to combine. In a large bowl combine the flour, eggs, vanilla and lemon extract. Stir to combine. Add add the sugar/yeast mixture. Stir until smooth and blended well. The dough will be sticky. Spread the dough in the 9 x 13 pan or divide between the two 9 inch cake pans. Set in a warm place and let rise 50 minutes.
  3. Mix the last three ingredients (butter, sugar, cinnamon). Sprinkle over the dough. Bake for 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the sugar/cinnamon topping is like syrup. Makes 12-16 servings.
