,%20and%20he%20and%20one%20of%20his%20best%20friends,%20%E2%80%98Mr.%20Donald%E2%80%99,%20carpooled.%20Come%20summertime,%20my%20brother%20and%20I%20would%20hop,%20sluggishly,%20into%20the%20cab%20seats%20of%20pops%E2%80%99%201985%20Nissan%20pickup%20promptly%20at%206%20am,%20and%20off%20to%20gramma%E2%80%99s%20we%20went%20for%20the%20day.%20Getting%20up%20with%20the%20roosters%E2%80%99%20crows%20was%20not%20something%20I%20looked%20forward%20to,%20but%20going%20to%20gramma%E2%80%99s%20certainly%20was.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20commute%20wasn%E2%80%99t%20bad,%20either.%20My%20pops%20let%20me%20get%20coffee%20from%20the%20corner%20store%20on%20most%20days,%20but%20every%20so%20often%20we%E2%80%99d%20skip%20the%20corner%20store%20and%20stop%20further%20along,%20near%20Skinners%20Bypass,%20to%20get%20a%20hot%20breakfast.%20To%20this%20day,%20I%20can%E2%80%99t%20remember%20what%20I%20used%20to%20get%20(probably%20a%20cheese%20biscuit,%20or%20maybe%20some%20pancakes%20if%20I%20wanted%20to%20push%20my%20luck%20with%20making%20a%20mess%E2%80%A6),%20but%20my%20brother,%20he%20always%20got%20grits.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHe%20loved%20grits%20so%20much%20that%20Mr.%20Donald%20stopped%20calling%20him%20Matt,%20and%20early%20on%20in%20our%20commuting%20days%20he%20began%20calling%20him%20Grits.%20%E2%80%9CGuh%20mornin%E2%80%99,%20Heather%20n%E2%80%99%20Grits%E2%80%9D.%20%E2%80%9CGoin%E2%80%99%20to%20gramma%20Maggie%E2%80%99s%20today?%E2%80%9D.%20Man,%20those%20were%20the%20days.%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20think%20my%20bro%20minded%20the%20nickname%20one%20bit%20though,%20as%20long%20as%20he%20could%20continue%20getting%20grits%20on%20the%20regular.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMe%20though?%20I%20was%20never%20a%20fan%20of%20the%20grainy,%20mushy,%20corn.%20The%20way%20I%20was%20schooled,%20you%20were%20either%20in%20the%20grits%20camp,%20or%20the%20oatmeal%20camp.%20Matt%20&%20I%20were%20polar%20opposites%20on%20the%20matter,%20and%20in%20that%20pickup%20truck,%20I%20was%20most%20certainly%20the%20odd%20man%20out.%20To%20this%20day,%20I%E2%80%99d%20choose%20oats%20over%20grits,%20and%20quite%20honestly,%20the%20grits%20and%20I%20are%20still%20not%20on%20the%20best%20of%20terms.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20with%20my%20sis%20and%20niece%20in%20town%20last%20weekend,%20I%E2%80%99d%20promised%20to%20cook%20one%20night.%20I%E2%80%99d%20sorta%20planned%20a%20homemade%20ravioli%20dish,%20but%20I%20could%20be%20easily%20coerced%20into%20something%20else,%20I%20figured.%20Early%20on%20in%20their%20visit,%20my%20sister%20made%20one%20of%20her%20random%20comments%20(she%20gets%20that%20from%20my%20mom):%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%E2%80%9Cdo%20yuuuu%20know%20whut%20theyyy%20stopped%20servin%E2%80%99%20baaack%20home?%20shrimp%20n%E2%80%99%20griyts.%20i%20caaayn%E2%80%99t%20fin%E2%80%99%20%E2%80%98em%20anywhayre.%20i%20suuure%20wood%20luv%20to%20git%20sum%20shrimp%20n%E2%80%99%20griyts.%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIrony%20of%20coming%20from%20the%20South%20to%20the%20Midwest%20for%20shrimp%20and%20grits%20aside,%20rather%20than%20taking%20a%20trip%20for%20sushi%20away%20from%20my%20niece,%20I%20quickly%20decided%20that%20I%E2%80%99d%20save%20the%20ravioli,%20and%20conquer%20this%20dish%20once%20and%20for%20all.%20Sure,%20I%20could%20have%20submitted%20an%20exotic%20Indian%20dish%20for%20this%20challenge,%20or%20perhaps%20made%20crepes,%20but%20I%20was%20challenged%20here,%20not%20because%20of%20the%20cuisine%20itself,%20but%20for%20other%20reasons:%20I%20was%20making%20a%20Southern/Cajun%20dish%20for%20someone%20who%20is%20a%20%E2%80%98grit%E2%80%99%20herself,%20and%20I%20was%20making%20a%20component%20I%20tend%20to%20stray%20away%20from.%20I%20wanted%20to%20prove%20myself%20wrong%20about%20grits%20and%20their%20textural%20shortcomings,%20and%20I%20wanted%20to%20show%20my%20sis%20that%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20to%20live%20in%20the%20South%20to%20make%20Southern%20food,%20and%20you%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20to%20rely%20on%20a%20restaurant%20to%20provide%20for%20ya.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%E2%80%99m%20still%20not%20sure%20if%20I%E2%80%99ll%20ever%20find%20myself%20ordering%20grits%20at%206%20am%20like%20my%20bro%20used%20to,%20heck%20%E2%80%93%20I%20hope%20to%20not%20order%20much%20of%20anything%20at%206%20am,%20but%20for%20the%20time%20being,%20oatmeal%20can%20certainly%20kiss%20my%20grits.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECajun%20Shrimp%20&%20Grits%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAdapted%20from%20The%20Boathouse%20in%20Charleston,%20SC%20via%20Epicurious.com;%20serves%206%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ethis%20is%20a%20great%20recipe%20even%20if%20you%20aren%E2%80%99t%20in%20the%20grits%20camp,%20but%20you%20have%20to%20enjoy%20a%20lil%E2%80%99%20spice%20in%20your%20life!%20alternatively,%20you%20could%20omit%20the%20hot%20sauce%20on%20top,%20but%20to%20me,%20that%E2%80%99s%20the%20best%20part%20%20.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eingredients%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Einstructions%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECombine%20hot%20pepper%20sauce,%20wine,%20shallot,%20lemon%20juice%20and%20vinegar%20in%20heavy%20medium%20saucepan.%20Boil%20over%20medium%20heat%20until%20reduced%20to%201/2%20c,%20abo
