Kerala Masala Dosa is one of the healthiest breakfast from South India. Though some love to have masala dosa for dinner or even lunch these days. Crispy flaky dosa is filled with mashed potatoes seasoned with spices and served with sambar or chutney.
Today, while going through my draft pictures I found this Masala Dosa pic which I had taken almost a year ago, I usually make them during weekends for dinner...and this pic was taken in the night...as I have mentioned earlier that I use point and shoot cam for all my pictures in the blog....it is difficult to take pictures during night...somehow, I got this click...which I guess is presentable :) and as I sat down today to write this post, I was surprised that I had completely forgotten about posting this easy, healthy, and filling meal, though I make it at least once a week. Its one of my favorite right from childhood.
Masala dosa is the most popular breakfast of Kerala, you got to any vegetarian or even non-vegetarian hotel, you can can find it in the menu.....though each one has their own distinct taste. I like masala dosa of Indian coffee house, which has branches all across the country...next time try an Indian Coffee House Masala Dosa.
To make masala dosa, all you need is some dosa batter and the filling is very easy to make. Potatoes are boiled and mashed and then seasoned with mustard seeds, curry leaves, whole red chilly, ginger, turmeric powder, and is filled into crispy dosa......so get your dosa batter ready!
Method:
Wash the potatoes thoroughly and put in a pressure cooker with water...let it cook for 3 to 4 whistles...allow it to cool down, peel off the skin...
And mash it up.
Heat oil in a kadai or pan, add in the mustard...simmer the fire, add in the red chilly, onion, ginger, curry leaves, turmeric, and salt.... saute for 2 min...
Add in the mashed potatoes....and mix well...switch off the fire.
Heat a tawa or dosa pan...and make dosa. ...drizzle ghee/or oil (Please go to How to make Dosa post if you need guidance on making dosa)
Place 2 to 3 tbsp of the potato masala in the center. Close the dosa into half or from both sides.
Serve hot!

- Potatoes: 500 gms
- Mustard seeds: 3/4 tsp
- Onion: 1 medium, chopped
- Turmeric powder: 1/2 tsp
- Whole Red Chilly: 3 to 4, broken
- Ginger: 1 small piece, grated or chopped
- Curry leaves: 2 sprigs
- Coconut Oil: 1 tbsp
- Salt: 1/2 tsp or according to your taste
METHOD:
Wash the potatoes thoroughly and put in a pressure cooker with water, let it cook for 3 to 4 whistles, allow it to cool down, peel off the skin and mash it up.
Heat oil in a kadai or pan, add in the mustard, simmer the fire. Add in the red chilly, onion, ginger, curry leaves, turmeric, and salt, saute for 2 min.
Add in the mashed potatoes and mix well. Switch off the fire.
Heat a tawa or dosa pan...and make dosa. ...drizzle ghee/or oil (Please go to How to make Dosa post if you need guidance on making dosa)

Serve hot with Kerala coconut chutney.
NOTES
You coconut oil for that authentic kerala taste.
Masala dosa is best served hot.
