Je Tries To Cook: Picadillo

Picadillo is simply ground beef (but we usually use ground pork) with tomato sauce, carrots and potatoes. I know that this dish is not suitable for the Holy Week, but this is the only time that I can update this blog. So please forgive me!

I believe that every woman should at least have one signature dish, the one dish that they can cook even with their eyes closed. Though I refuse to believe my mom because I think that it’s too easy for my masterful cooking skills, she says that Picadillo is my signature dish. It is the dish that defines me as a cook. Again, I refuse to believe her because I can cook more complicated dishes. Believe me. :p

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

1. Sauté the onions in a saucepan. Once the onions turn translucent, add the minced garlic.

2. Add the fish sauce (patis). My father taught me to always put the seasoning while sautéing.

3. Add in the ground pork.

4. This is the most difficult part. You have to wait until the ground pork gets brown, stirring it occasionally to prevent the meat from sticking into the pan. It will approximately take about 20 minutes, probably shorter when your meat has been thawed.

5. Put a dash of ground pepper, seasoning granules, parsley flakes and thyme.

6. Add the water. My dad wants our Picadillo a bit dry so I only put 1

1/4 cup of water. If you want it to have more sauce, add more water.

But make sure to adjust the seasoning.

7. Let it simmer for 3-5 minutes.

8. Add the potatoes. Leave it for 5-7 minutes.

9. Add the tomato sauce. If you have kids at home, you may opt to add some banana ketchup. If you want the Picadillo to be a bit spicy, add some hot sauce or chili flakes.

10. Add the sugar, carrots and hotdogs. Then let it simmer for another 5 minutes or until the potatoes are soft.

Again, even the best chefs taste their own dishes. This recipe is not perfect so you can play with it if you wish to. Also, don’t limit yourselves with potatoes, carrots and hotdogs. You may put green peas, bell pepper, corn or luncheon meat. :)
