Honey Butter Sopaipillas for Beginners

Famous Mexican dessert sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and drizzled with honey butter.

Rolled-out dough is deep fried in oil, and the pockets puff up in the middle.

If you are a beginning cook, exact instructions are stated, so give these a try.

You must roll out the dough and fry it at once, as the dough will not do well refrigerated; however, once the fried sopaipillas have returned to room temp, you can freeze them for later.

Recipe does well cut in half.

Equipment:

skillet
oil in skillet to one inch
thermometer (if you don't have one, it's not necessary)
slotted spoon
paper towel lined plates

  • 1/4 cup melted butter ( if you use salted butter, cut salt in half)
  • 1 cup milk
  • Sprinkle:
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • Drizzle:
  • 2 tbs. melted butter
  • 1 tbs. honey

Инструкции

  1. Combine dough ingredients in a bowl until thoroughly mixed.
  2. Lightly flour a work surface.
  3. Knead the dough 2-3 minutes.
  4. Only add flour if the dough is too tacky/wet.
  5. The dough should feel silky and smooth.
  6. Cover the dough and let it sit one hour.
  7. Knead again a few times, then divide the dough into 1 1/2 inch balls.
  8. Cover and let rest 10 minutes.
  9. Using a rolling pin, roll each ball into 1/8-1/4 inch circles. If the circles are not exact, no problem.
  10. Pour oil in the skillet and heat it to 375 degrees, or put the heat on high, wait a couple of minutes, then take a piece of your dough and drop it in. The oil is ready when the dough sizzles.
  11. Gently place 2-3 pieces of dough in the oil and begin to ladle or baste hot oil over the tops. This step is crucial to success.
  12. Cook 1 minute, flip to the other side, baste.
  13. The sopaipillas will puff up and form empty pockets in the middle.
  14. When golden brown each side, place on paper towels.
  15. Sprinkle on cinnamon sugar and serve with honey butter.
