December is national eggnog month and #SundaySupper is celebrating by sharing our best eggnog recipes. When I first read about the #SundaySupper theme for this week I thought this might be one that I would skip. I haven’t had eggnog in years because I didn’t like it enough to go out of my way to buy it.
My father who was a dairy farmer used to make eggnog for us with fresh eggs and milk from the farm. There was no cooking involved just eggs, sugar, cream and nutmeg mixed up in a blender. It wasn’t one of my favorite holiday treats, that’s for sure. I just couldn’t get past drinking cream and raw eggs, yuk! The nutmeg was the best part. So I thought why don’t I cook the mixture and turn it into ice cream because that sounded like a much better idea.
Before I got to the task of ice cream making, I did a little research just to make sure my father’s way of making eggnog was correct, which it was. While checking on the recipe, I found interesting tidbits about eggnog. . . The tradition of eggnog dates way back to the 18th century. It was a holiday treat for the wealthy because they were the only people that could afford the ingredients. The rum or bourbon was added so that the eggs and milk wouldn’t spoil. In honor of tradition, I added a few ounces of bourbon to my recipe. I am so happy that I found a much better way to enjoy Eggnog — Eggnog ice cream! This might just be my Christmas dessert this year along with cookies.
