%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESeriously.%20I%20brought%20my%20Kindle%20into%20the%20kitchen%20because%20I%20thought%20I'd%20just%20dump%20in%20the%20cream,%20turn%20on%20the%20mixer%20and%20read%20some%20chapters,%20just%20relaxing%20by%20the%20fire,%20while%20the%20butter%20made%20itself.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20started%20off%20as%20expected,%20see?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20...%20how%20relaxing%20does%20this%20look%20to%20you?%20(Good%20thing%20my%20Kindle%20was%20still%20relaxing%20in%20my%20chair,%20not%20on%20the%20counter.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EClearly%20this%20was%20my%20fault%20for%20two%20reasons:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20put%20two%20pints%20of%20cream%20in%20at%20one%20time.%20Clearly%20that%20was%20too%20much%20liquid%20to%20not%20expect%20massive%20splashing.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20had%20no%20idea%20that%20my%20mixer%20freakin'%20goes%20to%20eleven.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHonestly,%20I%20never%20turn%20the%20speed%20up%20above%20about%20level%203%20because%20that%20always%20seemed%20plenty%20powerful.%20But%20since%20the%20instructions%20for%20the%20butter%20said%20%22high%20speed,%22%20I%20decided%20to%20take%20a%20risk.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20very%20messy%20risk%20indeed.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnyhoo,%20all%20was%20not%20lost.%20I%20lowered%20the%20speed%20back%20to%20level%204%20and%20put%20a%20dishcloth%20blankie%20over%20the%20mixer.%20And%20whaddya%20know?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20about%20six%20minutes,%20I%20had%20lovely%20whipped%20cream.%20And%20after%20about%2014%20minutes,%20I%20had%20butter%20and%20buttermilk.%20No%20joke!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOnce%20you%20see%20the%20big%20blob%20of%20butter,%20it's%20done.%20Drain%20off%20the%20buttermilk%20into%20a%20container%20and%20stick%20it%20in%20the%20refrigerator%20for%20later%20use%20(see%20the%20cake%20recipe%20below).%20Then%20scrape%20out%20all%20the%20butter,%20mash%20it%20into%20a%20big%20ball%20and%20run%20it%20under%20cold%20water,%20squeezing%20out%20as%20much%20residual%20buttermilk%20as%20you%20possibly%20can%20(although%20it's%20not%20much).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen%20you%20can%20pack%20it%20into%20jars%20or%20containers,%20either%20to%20use%20over%20the%20next%20week%20or%20so%20or%20to%20freeze.%20(It%20freezes%20well.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20even%20decided%20to%20get%20cute%20and%20fancy%20and%20shape%20some%20of%20it%20into%20a%20stick.%20%20(Oh%20yeah,%20I%20just%20know%20the%20butter-shaper%20job%20offers%20are%20going%20to%20start%20pouring%20in%20now.)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EVerdict?%20As%20long%20as%20you%20keep%20your%20batches%20small%20and%20your%20speed%20under%20control,%20making%20your%20own%20butter%20is%20easy-peasy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENow%20...%20how%20to%20use%20that%20lovely%20butter%20and%20buttermilk?%20How%20about%20a%20pound%20cake%20(which%20is%20basically%20an%20excuse%20to%20eats%20lots%20of%20butter%20without%20just%20licking%20the%20stick)?%20Oh%20yeah.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20found%20this%20recipe%20via%20Pinterest.%20It's%20funny,%20I%20don't%20have%20a%20lot%20of%20recipes%20that%20call%20for%20buttermilk%20in%20my%20repertoire%20because%20I%20always%20avoided%20them%20so%20I%20didn't%20have%20to%20buy%20buttermilk%20(I%20ended%20up%20only%20using%20a%20smidge%20and%20then%20tossing%20the%20rest%20when%20it%20went%20bad).%20Then%20I%20discovered%20the%20make-your-own%20technique%20of%20adding%20white%20vinegar%20to%20a%20cup%20of%20milk:%20genius.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20now%20I%20had%20some%20real%20buttermilk,%20made%20by%20me%20(well,%20sort%20of%20--%20more%20like%20%22separated%20by%20me%22,%20I%20guess).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlus%20the%20perfect%20Bundt%20pan%20that%20I%20found%20...%20wait%20for%20it%20...%20AT%20THE%20DUMP.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOK,%20OK,%20before%20you%20freak%20out,%20let%20me%20explain.%20It's%20not%20really%20a%20dump,%20not%20the%20way%20I%20remember%20them%20from%20my%20youth.%20It's%20our%20local%20solid%20waste%20transfer%20station,%20where%20I%20can%20dispose%20of%20recyclables,%20composting%20scraps%20and%20yard%20waste,%20not%20just%20household%20trash.%20And%20at%20this%20station%20they%20have%20a%20little%20hut%20called%20the%20%22Re-Use%20Center%22,%20for%20items%20that%20are%20too%20good%20to%20throw%20away%20(books,%20household%20items,%20kids%20stuff,%20furniture).%20I%20always%20scout%20it%20out%20before%20I%20leave,%20just%20in%20case%20(I've%20gotten%20some%20canning%20jars%20and%20nice%20books)%20--%20because,%20let's%20face%20it,%20I%20think%20that%20somewhere%20deep%20inside%20of%20me%20lives%20a%20cheap%20hoarder%20who%20loves%20free%20stuff.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EA%20few%20weeks%20ago,%20I%20did%20a%20walk-through%20of%20the%20Re-Use%20Center%20after%20dropping%20off%20my%20composting%20scraps%20and%20--%20lo%20and%20behold%20--%20a%20stoneware%20Bundt%20pan.%20It%20clearly%20had%20never%20been%20used%20--%20ever.%20It%20was%20too%20pristine.%20So%20I%20snatched%20it%20up.%20Yep%20--%20beautiful%20stoneware%20for%20free.%20Score%20one%20for%20The%20Ninj.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen,%20of%20course,%20on%20the%20way%20home,%20I%20started%20thinking%20of%20it%20as%20my%20dump%20pan.%20There%20is%20just%20something%20so%20awesome%20about%20saying%20the%20words,%20%22Look%20what%20I%20got%20AT%20THE%20DUMP!%22%20Oh,%20the%20hilarity%20that%20ensued...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20back%20to%20the%20cake.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt's%20a%20lovely%20pound%20cake,%20rich%20and%20moist,%20with%20a%20not-too-rummy%20hint%20of%20rum.%20As%20is%20my%20wont,%20I%20left%20it%20un-iced%20so%20that%20we%20could%20eat%20it%20for%20breakfast%20as%20well%20as%20dessert.%20I'm%20sure%20it%20would%20be%20fantastic,%20though,%20with%20a%20rum%20sauce.%20I%20leave%20that%20up%20to%20the%20sweet-teeth%20out%20there.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20it%20tasted%20extra-amazing%20to%20me%20because%20it%20was%20made%20with%20homemade%20buttermilk%20and%20butter%20(Mr.%20Ninj's%20verdict%20on%20the%20butter?%20%22It%20tastes%20just%20like%20butter!%22%20Success!)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJust%20be%20happy%20because%20I%20was%20a%20hair's%20breadth%20away%20from%20calling%20this%20Buttermilk%20Dump%20Cake.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20the%20oven%20to%20325%20degrees.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20medium%20bowl,%20whisk%20together%20the%20first%20four%20ingredients%20and%20set%20aside.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20stand%20mixer,%20cream%20together%20the%20butter%20and%20sugar.%20Add%20rum%20and%20eggs%20and%20mix%20well.%20Add%20the%20dry%20ingredients%20and%20the%20buttermilk,%20mixing%20until%20well%20combined%20(a%20few%20minutes).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPour%20the%20batter%20into%20a%20prepared%209-%20or%2010-inch%20Bundt%20or%20other%20tube%20pan%20(preferably%20found%20AT%20THE%20DUMP).%20Bake%20for%20about%201%20hour%20or%20until%20skewer%20inserted%20into%20the%20middle%20comes%20out%20clean.%20Let%20the%20cake%20rest%20in%20the%20pan%20for%20about%205%20minutes%20before%20trying%20to%20remove%20it.%20Invert%20the%20cake%20onto%20a%20plate%20or%20wire%20rack%20and%20cool%20completely.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
