%20if%20I%20would%20let%20her.%20Both%20she%20and%20my%20husband%20love%20baked%20beans%20and%20can%20eat%20them%20by%20the%20plate%20or%20bowl%20full.%20Seriously,%20they%20will%20consume%20a%2028%20oz.%20can%20between%20just%20the%20two%20of%20them%20at%20a%20single%20meal.%20Their%20exuberance%20for%20baked%20beans%20motivated%20me%20to%20start%20making%20baked%20beans%20from%20scratch%20on%20a%20regular%20basis.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYes,%20making%20baked%20beans%20from%20scratch%20does%20take%20much%20longer%20than%20opening%20a%20can%20of%20beans,%20but%20it%20is%20an%20easy,%20mostly%20passive,%20process.%20Most%20of%20the%20time%20you%20are%20just%20waiting%20on%20the%20beans.%20The%20payoff%20is%20delicious%20baked%20beans%20made%20to%20your%20individual%20taste%20with%20ingredients%20you%20know.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20does%20beg%20the%20question%20my%20daughter%20asked,%20%E2%80%9CWhy%20have%20we%20not%20made%20them%20before%20when%20it%20they%20this%20easy%20to%20make%20and%20they%20taste%20so%20much%20better%20than%20[her]%20favorite%20canned%20ones?%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWell,%20I%20had%20made%20baked%20beans%20before%E2%80%A6just%20not%20for%20several%20years.%20The%20first%20time%20I%20remember%20making%20baked%20beans%20from%20scratch%20was%20for%20my%20high%20school%20graduation%20party.%20My%20aunt%20and%20I%20totally%20made%20it%20up%20as%20we%20went%20and%20ended%20up%20with%20a%20large%20roaster%20full%20of%20baked%20beans%20that%20had%20everyone%20asking%20us%20for%20the%20recipe.%20Unfortunately,%20we%20did%20not%20keep%20track%20of%20anything%20we%20did,%20so%20we%20couldn%E2%80%99t%20share%20or%20recreate%20the%20recipe.%20It%20has%20taken%20me%20decades%20years%20to%20come%20close,%20but%20I%20think%20I%20finally%20have%20figured%20out%20a%20recipe%20that%20is%20a%20close%20proximity%20to%20my%20high%20school%20graduation%20party%20beans.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20like%20bacon%20cooked%20on%20top%20to%20render%20the%20fat%20into%20the%20baked%20beans.%20I%20also%20prefer%20baked%20beans%20that%20are%20much%20thicker%20than%20most%20of%20the%20commercially%20canned%20beans.%20My%20baked%20beans%20are%20sweet%20without%20much%20heat.%20However,%20you%20can%20easily%20add%20and%20remove%20ingredients%20to%20modify%20the%20beans%20to%20your%20taste.%20Green%20peppers%20and%20hot%20pepper%20are%20often%20add-ins%20that%20add%20more%20savory%20flavors.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20recipe%20doubles,%20triples,%20etc.%20easily.%20A%20single%20batch%20recipe%20only%20costs%20me%20about%20$2.10%20and%20makes%20about%206%20cups%20or%20up%20to%2012%20servings.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERecipe:%20Homemade%20Baked%20Beans%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EInstructions:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERinse%20and%20sort%20dried%20beans.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20in%20a%20bowl%20or%20pot%20and%20cover%20by%20a%20couple%20of%20inches%20with%20water.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELet%20soak%20overnight,%208%20+/-%20hours.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDrain%20and%20rinse%20beans.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20beans%20in%20a%20dutch%20oven%20or%20heavy%20bottomed%20pot%20and%20cover%20by%20at%20least%20an%20inch%20of%20water,%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20on%20medium-high%20heat%20and%20bring%20to%20a%20boil;%20lower%20heat%20and%20let%20cook%20for%201%20to%201%201/2%20hours,%20stirring%20occasionally.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20oven%20to%20325.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDrain%20beans,%20reserving%20a%20couple%20of%20cups%20of%20the%20liquid.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20beans,%20ketchup,%20molasses,%20onion,%20salt,%20turmeric,%20paprika,%20mustard%20and%20Worcestershire%20sauce%20in%20a%20dutch%20oven,%20bean%20pot,%20etc.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETaste%20and%20adjust%20ingredients%20to%20desired%20taste.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETop%20with%20desired%20amount%20of%20bacon%20slices.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECover%20and%20place%20in%20oven%20for%2045%20minutes%20to%201%20hour.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemove%20cover%20and%20bake%20for%20at%20least%20another%20half%20and%20hour%20until%20bacon%20is%20cooked%20(it%20won%E2%80%99t%20be%20crisp)%20and%20top%20is%20brown%20and%20bubbly.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20beans%20are%20too%20dry%20when%20you%20remove%20the%20cover%20(or%20before)%20heat%20the%20reserved%20cooking%20liquid%20to%20boiling%20and%20add%20enough%20to%20get%20the%20desired%20consistency.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENotes:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20like%20very%20thick%20baked%20beans,%20reserve%20a%201/4%20to%201/2%20cup%20of%20the%20cooked%20beans.%20Mash%20or%20puree%20the%20beans%20and%20add%20them%20with%20the%20other%20ingredients%20before%20baking.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENavy%20beans%20are%20the%20usual%20bean%20used%20for%20baked%20beans.%20Great%20Northern%20can%20be%20substituted.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFresh%20or%20sauteed%20green,%20red%20or%20yellow%20peppers,%20hot%20peppers,%20hot%20sauce,%20etc.%20can%20be%20added.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you%20want%20crunchy%20or%20more%20bacon%20flavor,%20cook%20several%20slices%20of%20bacon%20until%20they%20are%20very%20crispy.%20Place%20the%20rendered%20bacon%20fat%20and/or%20the%20crispy%20bacon%20in%20the%20completely%20cooked%20beans.%3C/p%3E
