%20that%20isn't%20a%20tampon%20or%20a%20pad.%20Actually,%20it's%20not%20new%20-%20it's%20been%20around%20since%20the%201930's.%20It's%20more%20effective,%20more%20comfortable%20and%20much%20more%20environmental.%20What%20is%20it%20you%20ask?%20It's%20a%20menstrual%20cup,%20which%20is%20basically%20a%20bell-shaped%20cup%20made%20from%20medical%20grade%20silicone,%20polyethylene%20or%20other%20nonlatex%20materials%20that%20is%20worn%20inside%20the%20vagina%20to%20collect%20menstrual%20fluid.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EConventional%20Sanitary%20Pads.%20They%20are%20easy%20to%20use%20and%20figure%20out.%20However,%20there%20can%20be%20leaking%20and%20messiness%20involved,%20and%20it%20feels%20like%20you're%20sitting%20on%20a%20pillow%20so%20some%20women%20turn%20to%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EConventional%20Tampons.%20These%20are%20so%20much%20harder%20to%20learn%20to%20use%20than%20pads,%20but%20provide%20so%20much%20more%20freedom%20once%20you%20get%20used%20to%20them.%20However,%20they%20still%20require%20regular%20purchasing%20and%20can%20be%20leaky.%20Wondering%20about%20the%20health%20effects%20of%20them,%20you%20might%20turn%20to%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EUnbleached%20Organic%20Tampons.%20If%20you%20have%20something%20in%20you%20for%20days,%20you%20want%20to%20make%20sure%20its%20as%20toxin-%20free%20as%20possible.%20Your%20vagina%20absorbs%20well,%20which%20is%20why%20medicines%20can%20be%20delivered%20through%20vaginal%20suppositories.%20Using%20nonchlorinated%20tampons%20means%20less%20chemicals%20for%20you%20and%20the%20environment.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20at%20stage%203,%20and%20wondering%20if%20there%20was%20anything%20better%20because%20tampons%20really%20aren't%20all%20that%20great.%20I%20hate%20having%20to%20remember%20to%20buy%20them,%20they're%20drying%20and%20they%20can%20leak.%20They%20also%20didn't%20feel%20green%20-%20all%20the%20material%20and%20energy%20that%20went%20into%20making%20them%20and%20then%20they%20were%20disposed%20of.%20Then%20one%20day%20I%20read%20an%20article%20about%20menstrual%20cups.%20Soon%20after%20that%20I%20was%20at%20Whole%20Foods%20buying%20some%20nonchlorinated%20cotton%20tampons,%20and%20I%20saw%20some%20menstrual%20cups.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20seemed%20weird,%20but%20in%20the%20name%20of%20science,%20I%20bought%20one.%20What%20happens%20to%20the%20fluid?%20Isn't%20it%20messy?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20three%20months,%20I%20love%20it.%20I%20can't%20feel%20it,%20it%20doesn't%20leak,%20it's%20not%20drying,%20there's%20no%20string%20hanging%20around,%20I%20don't%20need%20to%20remember%20to%20bring%20a%20tampon%20to%20the%20bathroom%20(because%20it's%20always%20with%20you),%20and%20I've%20saved%20a%20lot%20of%20money.%20%20I%20wish%20I'd%20learned%20about%20them%2010%20years%20ago!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhat's%20the%20downside?%20The%20icky%20factor%20(which%20isn't%20so%20icky).%20So%20here's%20the%20unvarnished%20scoop:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMenstrual%20cups%20come%20in%20two%20types%20-%20reusable%20and%20disposable.%20I%20bought%20the%20DivaCup,%20which%20is%20reusable.%20There's%20also%20the%20Moon%20Cup,%20Soft%20Cup,%20Glad%20Rags,%20and%20others.%20Read%20the%20box%20for%20sizing%20instructions.%20Then%20if%20you%20decide%20to%20try%20it,%20make%20sure%20you%20read%20all%20the%20instructions%20beforehand.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELearning%20how%20to%20use%20it%20was%20tough.%20Give%20yourself%20some%20time.%20I%20was%20tense,%20and%20had%20to%20remember%20to%20relax.%20It%20was%20like%20learning%20how%20to%20use%20a%20tampon%20for%20the%20first%20time.%20The%20first%20cycle%20it%20took%20me%20a%20while%20to%20insert%20and%20remove.%20Minutes.%20It%20took%20so%20much%20time,%20I%20didn't%20think%20it%20was%20sustainable.%20But%20I%20stuck%20with%20it,%20and%20it%20got%20slightly%20easier.%20The%20next%20month%20I'd%20forgotten%20all%20over%20again.%20But%20it%20took%20me%20a%20shorter%20time%20to%20figure%20it%20out.%20Now%20it%20just%20takes%20seconds%20to%20insert%20and%20remove.%20Really.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20why%20is%20it%20so%20great?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMore%20comfortable.%20It's%20not%20drying,%20there's%20no%20risk%20of%20toxic%20shock%20syndrome%20and%20it's%20less%20leaky.%20I%20think%20the%20times%20it%20has%20leaked%20has%20been%20due%20to%20operator%20error.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMore%20freedom.%20It's%20the%20closest%20to%20forgetting%20about%20having%20your%20period.%20There's%20no%20tell-tale%20string,%20you%20can't%20feel%20anything,%20and%20you%20don't%20have%20to%20remember%20to%20carry%20sanitary%20protection%20around%20with%20you%20because%20it's%20always%20with%20you.%20You%20also%20don't%20have%20to%20remember%20to%20buy%20products.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EYou%20learn%20more%20about%20your%20body.%20I'm%20as%20squeamish%20as%20anyone,%20but%20you%20learn%20a%20lot%20more%20about%20your%20cycle%20and%20how%20your%20body%20works.%20That's%20pretty%20cool.%20It%20is%20your%20body,%20after%20all.%20You%20should%20get%20to%20know%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt's%20environmental.%20If%20you%20get%20the%20reusable%20ones,%20you%20aren't%20adding%
