%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20are%20going%20to%20Greece%20today%20and%20I%20just%20found%20out%20that%20it%20is%20officially%20know%20as%20the%20'Hellenic%20Republic'.%20That%20is%20my%20geographic%20tidbit%20for%20the%20day%20:-)%20Greece%20is%20located%20at%20the%20crossroads%20of%20Europe,%20Asia%20&%20Africa.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGreece%20is%20the%20home%20to%20the%20first%20advanced%20civilizations%20in%20Europe%20and%20is%20considered%20the%20birthplace%20of%20Western%20civilization.%20Greece%20has%20a%20rich%20culture%20that%20has%20evolved%20over%20thousands%20of%20years.%20Modern%20democracies%20owe%20a%20debt%20to%20Greek%20beliefs%20in%20government%20by%20the%20people,%20by%20the%20jury%20and%20equality%20under%20the%20law.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGreek%20cuisine%20is%20characteristic%20of%20the%20healthy%20Mediterranean%20diet.%20Greek%20cuisine%20incorporates%20fresh%20ingredients%20into%20most%20of%20its%20dishes.%20With%20the%20rich%20culture%20it%20has,%20some%20of%20the%20dishes%20can%20be%20traced%20back%20to%20ancient%20Greece.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20most%20characteristic%20and%20ancient%20element%20of%20Greek%20cuisine%20is%20Olive%20Oil,%20which%20is%20used%20in%20most%20dishes.%20Wheat%20is%20the%20basic%20grain,%20though%20barley%20is%20also%20grown.%20Greek%20cuisine%20uses%20flavorings%20like%20oregano,%20mint,%20onion,%20garlic,%20dill%20more%20than%20other%20Mediterranean%20cuisines.%20They%20also,%20especially%20in%20the%20northern%20parts%20of%20Greece,%20use%20sweet%20spices%20like%20cinnamon%20and%20cloves%20with%20meat%20dishes.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThere%20is%20an%20amazing%20array%20of%20vegetarian%20Greek%20dishes,%20but%20I%20decided%20to%20do%20a%20Greek%20dessert.%20I%20absolutely%20loved%20the%20name%20of%20this%20dish,%20actually%20I%20loved%20the%20way%20it%20is%20say%20by%20Greek%20--%20loukoumades%20with%20a%20Greek%20accent%20:-)%20They%20are%20nothing%20but%20yeast%20donuts%20that%20are%20drizzled%20with%20copius%20amounts%20of%20honey%20syrup%20and%20enjoyed%20hot.%20They%20are%20crispy%20on%20the%20outside%20and%20light%20and%20airy%20in%20the%20inside.%20They%20are%20dangerously%20addictive%20and%20you%20can%20never%20stop%20at%20just%20one.%20So%20make%20them%20when%20you%20have%20company,%20so%20you%20can%20share%20them.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERecipe%20adapted%20from%20here%20and%20here.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%20Serves%204~5%20people%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20Loukoumades%20Batter:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMethod:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMake%20the%20Batter%20for%20Loukoumades:%20Combine%20all%20the%20ingredients%20for%20the%20batter%20in%20a%20mixing%20bowl%20or%20the%20bowl%20of%20the%20stand%20mixer.%20Mix%20until%20well%20combined.%20Cover%20and%20set%20aside%20to%20rise%20for%20at%20least%201%C2%BD%20hour.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMake%20the%20Honey%20syrup:%20Combine%20all%20the%20ingredients%20for%20the%20syrup%20in%20a%20small%20saucepan.%20Bring%20to%20a%20boil%20on%20high%20heat.%20Lower%20the%20heat%20and%20simmer%20for%201~2%20minutes.%20Keep%20warm.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20make%20Loukoumades:%20Heat%20oil%20for%20deep%20frying.%20Take%202%20teaspoons%20and%20dip%20them%20in%20water.%20Scoop%20out%20the%20batter%20with%20one%20spoon%20and%20gently%20slide%20into%20the%20hot%20oil%20with%20the%20other.%20Make%20sure%20that%20water%20does%20not%20drip%20into%20the%20hot%20oil.%20Dipping%20in%20water%20makes%20the%20batter%20not%20stick%20to%20the%20spoon.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFry%20the%20loumades%20until%20golden%20on%20all%20sides,%20flipping%20and%20turning%20occasionally%20using%20a%20slotted%20spoon.%20Don't%20fry%20on%20too%20high%20flame%20make%20sure%20that%20the%20flame%20is%20medium%20to%20make%20perfectly%20golden%20donuts.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERemove%20onto%20a%20paper%20towel%20lined%20plate.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERepeat%20with%20the%20remaining%20batter.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20Serve:%20Place%20the%20loukoumades%20on%20the%20serving%20plate%20and%20drizzle%20generously%20with%20the%20honey%20syrup.%20Sprinkle%20chopped%20walnuts%20and%20serve%20immediately!!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
