%20and%20there%20are%20many%20familiar%20faces%20among%20them.%20There's%20the%20cat%20that's%20always%20dirty%20and%20slightly%20sick%20but%20who%20just%20lays%20about%20sleeping.%20There's%20the%20deli%20(crazy)%20cat%20who%20constantly%20meows,%20zips%20around,%20and%20demands%20attention.%20And%20there's%20Aslan%20(lion)%20who%20I%20named%20when%20she%20first%20started%20hanging%20out%20with%20us%20this%20summer.%20Her%20paws%20were%20just%20so%20much%20bigger%20than%20she%20was%20and%20I%20thought%20she%20looked%20like%20a%20lion%20cub.%20She%20crawls%20around%20all%20of%20us%20during%20class%20wanting%20pets%20and%20cuddles%20and%20disturbs%20our%20note%20taking%20by%20trying%20to%20play%20with%20our%20pens%20when%20we're%20writing.%20She%20has%20a%20purr%20that's%20about%20three%20times%20her%20size.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENo%20scurvy%20happening%20here!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20clever%20segue%20into%20alcohol%20is%20that%20a)%20my%20Turkish%20is%20always%20a%20little%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ebetter%20after%20a%20few%20drinks%20and%20b)%20the%20thought%20that%20I%20now%20have%20to%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Efunction%20in%20Turkish%20(since%20I%20no%20longer%20have%20the%20excuse%20that%20I'm%20just%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Elearning!)%20really%20makes%20me%20want%20to%20drink.%20Frankly%20so%20does%20the%20Turkish%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Elanguage.%20It's%20fracking%20hard!%20Like%20really,%20really%20hard.%20I%20know%20hard%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Elanguages.%20I%20took%20five%20years%20of%20Russian,%20%20three%20years%20of%20Mandarin,%20one%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ein%20Taiwan,%20and%20a%20year%20and%20a%20half%20of%20Arabic.%20Turkish%20falls%20somewhere%20in%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ethe%20middle%20of%20all%20of%20those%20for%20degree%20of%20difficulty.%20The%20words%20just%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Edon't%20end,%20especially%20the%20verbs.%20You%20can%20pile%20suffixes%20onto%20words%20-%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EINCLUDING%20THE%20VERBS%20-%20pretty%20much%20forever.%20I'm%20a%20little%20horrified%20even%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Etalking%20about%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECheap%20Turkish%20wine,%20vinegar...same%20thing%20really%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EShrub,%20which%20is%20basically%20fancy%20drinking%20vinegar%20and%20is%20often%20made%20out%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eof%20overripe%20fruit%20can%20be%20drunk%20on%20it's%20own%20or%20mixed%20with%20liquor%20and/or%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Esoda.%20E%20got%20really%20into%20making%20shrub%20over%20the%20summer.%20I%20think%20she%20made%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eone%20peach%20and%20one%20strawberry.%20She%20likes%20things%20rather%20less%20sweet%20than%20do%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20so%20hers...needed%20to%20be%20cut%20pretty%20significantly.%20The%20first%20one%20I%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Etried%20was%20sooo%20vinegary%20that%20my%20face%20did%20that%20thing%20where%20it%20basically%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ecaved%20in%20on%20itself.%20You%20know%20what%20I'm%20talking%20about...like%20when%20you%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Etaste%20something%20super%20sour%20and%20your%20mouth%20tries%20to%20retreat%20into%20your%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eface,%20you%20wrinkle%20your%20nose,%20and%20squeeze%20your%20eyes%20shut%20like%20if%20you%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ecan't%20see%20it%20you%20can%20also%20no%20longer%20taste%20it.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMost%20people%20view%20shrub%20as%20a%20summer%20thing%20but%20I%20found%20a%20great%20recipe%20for%20spiced%20orange%20shrub.%20Call%20me%20crazy%20but%20the%20combined%20scents%20of%20oranges,%20cinnamon,%20and%20clove%20have%20always%20smelled%20like%20Christmas!%20What%20better%20flavor%20for%20making%20Christmas%20and%20New%20Year%20cocktails?!%20It's%20a%20bit%20sticky%20in%20the%20making%20and%20I've%20had%20to%20sponge%20off%20my%20counters%20so%20many%20times%20they've%20probably%20never%20been%20this%20clean...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20the%20end,%20absolutely%20worth%20all%20the%20stickiness.%20I%20like%20to%20mix%20it%20with%20vodka%20and%20sparkling%20water.%20And%20after%20it's%20been%20strained%20the%20orange%20slices%20make%20nice%20garnish!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ERecipe%20(adapted%20from%20Cooking%20Stoned):%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Esieve%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Emortal%20and%20pestle%20(or%20other%20poundy%20tool)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eanother%20jar,%20bottle,%20something%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreparation:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWash%20and%20dry%20the%20oranges.%20Quarter%20them%20lengthwise%20then%20cut%20crosswise%20about%201/4%20inch%20thick.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAlternate%20layers%20of%20orange%20slices%20and%20sugar%20in%20the%20jar.%20Close%20it%20up%20and%20shake%20until%20as%20many%20of%20the%20orange%20slices%20as%20possible%20are%20coated%20with%20the%20sugar.%20Set%20aside%20for%20FIVE%20hours.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhile%20you're%20being%20patient,%20crush%20the%20bejesus%20out%20of%20the%20pepper%20corns,%20cloves,%20and%20cinnamon%20sticks.%20Enjoy%20the%20scent%20because%20it%20smells%20great-the%20addition%20of%20the%20black%20pepper%20is%20surprisingly%20nice.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E....Five%20hours%20later%20add%20the%20vinegar%20to%20the%20jar,%20seal%20it%20really%20well,%20and%20shake%20the%20crap%20out%20of%20it%20to%20dissolve%20remaining%20sugar.%20Then%20add%20the%20crushes%20spices.%20shake%20it%20up%20a%20bit%20more,%20and%20store%20in%20a%20dark%20space%20for%20day.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStrain%20%20the%20liquid%20into%20another%20jar,%20a%20bottle,%20a%20whatever.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEnjoy!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*I%20can't%20get%20champagne%20vinegar%20at%20my%20Carrefour.%20Or%20white%20wine%20vinegar.%20Just%20regular%20white%20vinegar%20which%20is%20far%20too%20astringent%20for%20this.%20Instead%20I%20used%20Sava%20brand%20white%20wine%20(which%20let's%20face%20it%20is%20basically%20vinegar%20anyway)%20and%20a%20few%20tablespoons%20of%20white%20vinegar.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
