- Preheat oven to 350 degrees, F. and butter an 8" or 9" round cake pan.
- Blend the sugar and shortening, creaming it until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg and molasses; beat thoroughly.
- Sift the dry ingredients (or mix them with a whisk to lighten the flour)
- Alternately add the molasses mixture alternately with the boiling water, beating after each addition.
- Bake about 18 - 20 minutes.
- In the meantime, blend the topping ingredients and set aside.
- remove from oven and sprinkle the topping over the top and return to oven an additional 10 minutes, or until cake tester comes out of the gingerbread cleanly.
- Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.
