%20than%20listening%20to%20my%2013-%20and%2014-year-old%20students%20put%20on%20their%20heavy%20armor%20at%20such%20a%20young%20age.%20The%20other%20day%20I%20was%20grading%20tests%20with%20a%20few%20girls%20in%20my%20room%20during%20lunch.%20They%20had%20a%20Taylor%20Swift%20song%20playing%20in%20the%20background%20and%20we%20were%20chatting%20about%20the%20music%20video%20when%20one%20of%20them%20said%20wistfully,%20%E2%80%9CShe%E2%80%99s%20so%20pretty.%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20walk%20a%20careful%20line%20at%20this%20juncture.%20Even%20after%20years%20of%20reading,%20thinking,%20learning,%20feeling,%20it%E2%80%99s%20still%20a%20tightrope.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETaylor%20Swift%20is%20lovely.%20She%E2%80%99s%20also%20extremely%20thin.%20I%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20presume%20to%20know%20anything%20about%20her%20health,%20but%20it%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20matter%20if%20she%E2%80%99s%20healthy%20or%20not%20in%20this%20conversation:%20what%20matters%20is%20that%20she%20fits%20the%20excruciatingly%20narrow%20definition%20of%20beauty%20sold%20to%20us%20by%20American%20pop%20culture%20and%20that%20I%20had%20a%20healthy%20little%20person%20sitting%20in%20front%20of%20me%20idealizing%20that.%20When%20I%20hear%20those%20sighing%20comments,%20my%20teacher%20gears%20work%20overtime.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20want%20them%20to%20recognize%20their%20attraction%20to%20thinness%20as%20a%20construct%20so%20they%20can%20decide%20what%20to%20do%20with%20it.%20I%20also%20want%20them%20to%20recognize%20that%20thinness%20can%20be%20healthy,%20but%20it%E2%80%99s%20just%20one%20of%20many%20healthy,%20happy%20body%20types%20women%20have.%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20want%20them%20to%20arm%20themselves%20against%20one%20form%20of%20body%20shaming%20by%20using%20another.%20Instead,%20I%20want%20them%20to%20take%20a%20step%20back%20and%20see%20the%20hamster%20ball%20we%E2%80%99re%20all%20in%20%E2%80%94%20why%20we%20push%20and%20pull%20against%20these%20things%20in%20the%20first%20place%20and%20who%20holds%20the%20puppet%20strings%20of%20all%20these%20conflicting%20desires.%20But%20I%20also%20don%E2%80%99t%20want%20them%20to%20feel%20bitter%20or%20victimized.%20I%20want%20them%20to%20feel%20powerful.%20If%20they%20can%20see%20what%E2%80%99s%20happening,%20they%E2%80%99re%20in%20charge.%20They%20can%20see%20the%20man%20behind%20the%20curtain.%20They%20can%20choose%20to%20interact%20with%20him%20or%20they%20can%20choose%20to%20click%20their%20heels%20and%20leave%20anytime%20they%20want.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAll%20these%20gears%20turn%20in%20my%20head%20as%20I%E2%80%99m%20sorting%20out%20just%20what%20to%20say.%20But%20before%20I%20can%20really%20say%20much,%20I%20hear%20the%20clang%20and%20clamor%20of%20them%20putting%20on%20their%20own%20armor.%20They%E2%80%99re%20discussing%20amongst%20themselves:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%E2%80%9CReally,%20we%20shouldn%E2%80%99t%20work%20to%20be%20thin.%20We%20should%20work%20to%20get%20strong!%20To%20get%20muscles.%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%E2%80%9CBut%20it%E2%80%99s%20okay%20to%20be%20naturally%20thin.%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%E2%80%9CYeah,%20it%E2%80%99s%20okay%20to%20be%20naturally%20thin.%20We%20just%20shouldn%E2%80%99t%20try%20to%20lose%20weight.%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%E2%80%9CExercise%20is%20to%20make%20your%20heart%20healthy%20and%20to%20build%20strength.%E2%80%9D%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20chime%20in%20now%20and%20again%20to%20encourage,%20but%20they%E2%80%99ve%20almost%20gotten%20the%20last%20piece%20of%20armor%20nailed%20down%20tight%20all%20on%20their%20own.%20I%20have%20no%20doubt%20their%20diligent%20mothers,%20fathers,%20teachers,%20sisters,%20and%20brothers%20have%20been%20passing%20them%20this%20armor%20one%20piece%20at%20a%20time%20since%20they%20were%20born.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20week%20or%20two%20we%E2%80%99ll%20start%20a%20project%20inspired%20by%20Sandra%20Cisneros%E2%80%99s%20The%20House%20on%20Mango%20Street%20and%20Tree%20Change%20Dolls%20where%20we%E2%80%99ll%20examine%20the%20media%20messages%20that%20construct%20our%20ideas%20of%20femininity%20and%20masculinity,%20and%20then%20we%E2%80%99ll%20choose%20a%20bit%20of%20pop%20culture%20to%20recreate.%20I%20hope%20I%E2%80%99ll%20pass%20another%20little%20piece%20of%20armor%20to%20them.%20I%20also%20long%20for%20the%20day%20when%20they%20can%20remove%20that%20armor%20and%20know%20they%E2%80%99re%20still%20safe%20%E2%80%94%20when%20we%20can%20look%20out%20for%20each%20other%20in%20ways%20that%20are%20affirming%20of%20everybody,%20every%20body.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFive%20years%20ago:%20Clementine%20Cake%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
