,%20I%20failed%20to%20post%20the%20Friday%20Cocktail%20on%20Friday!%20Better%20late%20than%20never%20I%20hope.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Bee%E2%80%99s%20Knees%20is%20a%20prohibition%20era%20cocktail,%20by%20some%20accounts%20created%20as%20a%20way%20to%20mask%20the%20flavor%20of%20bathtub%20gin%20(which%20has%20always%20sounded%20kind%20of%20gross%20to%20me%E2%80%94perfect%20place%20to%20keep%20your%20gin%20and%20take%20care%20of%20that%20ring%20around%20the%20tub!)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20the%20cocktail%20itself%20is%20splendid,%20a%20classic%20sour,%20dormant%20since%20its%20heyday%20until%20contemporary%20mixologists%20picked%20it%20back%20up.%20I%20keep%20it%20to%20a%20golden%20sour%20ratio%20of%202%20parts%20hooch,%201%20part%20sour,%201%20part%20sweet.%20Here%20the%20sour%20is%20lemon%20juice%20and%20the%20sweet%20is%20honey%20syrup%20(equal%20parts%20honey%20and%20water,%20heated%20to%20blend%20then%20cooled).%20As%20always,%20I%20recommend%20starting%20at%20a%20basic%20ratio,%20tasting%20and%20adjusting%20as%20necessary%20before%20chilling%20and%20pouring.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20Sam%20Hood%20Adrain,%20my%20sound%20technician%20and%20video%20director,%20heard%20there%20was%20a%20new%20distillery%20in%20our%20town%20of%20Providence,%20RI,%20where%20we%E2%80%99ve%20been%20sheltering%20since%20March%2013th,%20the%20first%20distillery%20in%20the%20city%20since%20prohibition,%20he%20contacted%20The%20Industrious%20Spirits%20Company%20to%20learn%20more.%20The%20distillery%20uses%20only%20regional,%20non-GMO,%20organic%20grains%20to%20make%20vodka%20and%20gin%20(with%20the%20more%20time%20consuming%20whiskeys%20to%20come).%20They%20were%20scheduled%20to%20open%20to%20the%20public%20in%20April,%20alas.%20But%20you%20can%20still%20sample%20their%20spirits,%20available%20at%20the%20distillery%20or%20at%20various%20shops%20in%20Rhode%20Island.%20They%20happily%20provided%20a%20bottle%20to%20sample%20(thank%20you!).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%E2%80%99s%20intensely%20herbaceous%20so%20I%20wouldn%E2%80%99t%20use%20this%20for%20a%20martini,%20but%20it%20works%20great%20in%20more%20complex%20cocktails%20such%20as%20a%20sour.%20They%20suggested%20a%20Bee%E2%80%99s%20Knees,%20and%20they%20were%20right!%20Welcome%20to%20Providence,%20ISco!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMy%20reading%20today%20is%20from%20the%20eminent%20poet%20and%20teacher%20(at%20Washington%20U%20in%20St.%20Louis),%20whom%20I%20met%20at%20Bread%20Loaf.%20I%20was%20intrigued%20to%20find%20that,%20in%20looking%20for%20one%20of%20his%20poems%20that%20included%20bees,%20that%20an%20article%20on%20Medium%20actually%20addresses%20the%20poet%E2%80%99s%20use%20of%20horses%20and%20bees.%20In%20this%20poem,%20Aubade:%20Some%20Peaches,%20After%20Storm%20(lovely%20title,%20that),%20notice%20how%20bees%20though%20not%20actually%20present,%20are%20evoked;%20I%20love%20how%20bees%20are%20used%20to%20signal%20rot.%20(An%20aubade%20is%20a%20poem%20appropriate%20to%20dawn%20or%20early%20morning,%20but%20I%E2%80%99m%20using%20it%20for%20the%20evening%20cocktail%20any%20way.%20I%20love%20the%20evocative,%20specific,%20sensual%20first%20stanza%20countering%20the%20mysterious%20abstract%20second%20stanza.%20Carl%E2%80%99s%20latest%20book%20is,%20Pale%20Colors%20In%20a%20Tall%20Field:%20Poems.%20Highly%20recommend.%20Support%20our%20poets!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHappy%20Friday%20everyone%20(even%20though%20I%E2%80%99m%20typing%20this%20on%20Sunday!)!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Bee%E2%80%99s%20Knees%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECombine%20the%20fluids.%20Taste%20and%20adjust%20to%20your%20liking.%20Add%20ice%20and%20chill.%20Strain%20into%20a%20chilled%20coup%20or%20over%20ice%20and%20garnish%20with%20a%20twist.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
