Ufda. Uff da. It's been so long since I've been in the kitchen. Fortunately, this recipe is a treat worth waiting for.
Berries are definitely my favorites when it comes to summer fruits. And blackberries -- well, they pretty much take the cake as far as I'm concerned.
Because they don't ship well, you'll seldom find blackberries in the market . And the sheer rarity of them probably fuels my seemingly insatiable desire for them. However, if (like me) you're lucky enough to find a local source for them, you may be able to get your fill during the latter days of summer.

%20you're%20lucky%20enough%20to%20find%20a%20local%20source%20for%20them,%20you%20may%20be%20able%20to%20get%20your%20fill%20during%20the%20latter%20days%20of%20summer.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIf%20you've%20ever%20been%20fortunate%20enough%20to%20pick%20your%20own,%20the%20flavor%20of%20blackberries%20--%20tart,%20yet%20sweeter%20then%20their%20distant%20cousin%20the%20raspberry%20--%20is%20likely%20to%20conjure%20nothing%20less%20than%20images%20&%20memories%20of%20sweltering%20summer%20days,%20brambly%20thorn-ridden%20bushes,%20and%20the%20inevitable%20purpled%20fingers.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20year,%20I%20happened%20to%20have%20sourced%20my%20berries%20at%20Outpost,%20our%20local%20food%20co-op.%20%20There%20weren't%20many,%20but%20I%20bought%20up%20everything%20that%20I%20could,%20knowing%20that%20I'd%20find%20a%20use%20for%20them%20before%20they%20turned%20bad.%20%20I%20didn't%20quite%20have%20enough%20berries%20to%20make%20Megan's%20Blackberry%20Basil%20Jam%20(though%20I'm%20still%20haunted%20by%20the%20thought%20of%20it).%20And,%20as%20much%20as%20eating%20pints%20of%20berries%20out%20of%20hand%20sounded%20like%20a%20great%20plan,%20I%20really%20wanted%20to%20stretch%20it%20out%20as%20far%20as%20I%20could%20--%20to%20prolong%20the%20joy,%20so%20to%20speak.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20be%20honest,%20there%20wasn't%20much%20conversation%20at%20all%20before%20we%20decided%20on%20making%20a%20batch%20of%20ice%20cream.%20No%20surprise%20there,%20right?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20we%20did%20what%20we%20usually%20do.%20%20We%20dragged%20out%20all%20the%20ice%20cream%20cookbooks%20we%20could%20find%20and%20started%20playing%20around%20with%20recipes.%20%20What%20we%20came%20up%20with%20was%20an%20absolute%20delight%20--%20rich,%20creamy%20vanilla%20ice%20cream%20with%20plenty%20of%20daubs%20of%20tart/sweet%20berries.%20Exactly%20the%20sort%20of%20thing%20you'd%20want%20to%20pile%20into%20a%20cone%20on%20a%20warm%20late%20summer's%20night%20and%20enjoy%20right%20out%20on%20the%20patio.%20%20Or,%20in%20our%20case,%20feed%20to%20our%20adorable%20niece!%20%20(She,%20btw,%20declared%20the%20icecream%20%22marvelous%22%20and%20proceeded%20to%20tell%20everyone%20that%20we'd%20made%20it%20%22just%20for%20her.%22)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20recipe%20for%20the%20ice%20cream%20is%20basic%20--%20just%20a%20rich%20vanilla%20base%20with%20a%20blackberry%20swirl.%20That%20said,%20I%20want%20to%20share%20a%20couple%20of%20pieces%20of%20information%20with%20you%20while%20I'm%20writing%20all%20of%20this%20down.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWe%20mashed%201%201/2%20cups%20fresh%20blackberries%20with%20a%20fork%20and%20about%203-4%20tablespoons%20of%20sugar%20and%20a%20teaspoon%20of%20fresh%20lemon%20juice.%20We%20took%20David%20Lebovitz's%20advice%20and%20added%20a%20bit%20of%20vodka%20to%20the%20berries%20to%20keep%20them%20from%20freezing%20solid,%20and%20then%20we%20layered%20the%20blackberries%20in%20with%20the%20churned%20ice%20cream.%20%20The%20trick%20didn't%20work%20quite%20as%20well%20as%20I'd%20hoped%20(the%20berries%20froze%20a%20bit%20more%20solid%20than%20I%20would%20have%20liked)%20--%20not%20sure%20exactly%20why.%20But,%20I%20plan%20to%20play%20around%20with%20the%20proportions%20of%20berries%20to%20alcohol%20next%20time%20to%20see%20what%20I%20can%20come%20up%20with.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBeautiful.%20Luscious.%20And%20perfectly%20local.%20%20Just%20about%20nothing%20beats%20a%20bowl%20of%20blackberry%20ice%20cream.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E%C2%A9BURP!%20Where%20Food%20Happens%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
