My son’s recent birth was in a Costa Rican public hospital, a far cry from my daughter’s natural home birth. I still can’t believe I gave birth in a third world country, especially under free public care, but thankfully Elijah Josias’ birth went smoothly, despite my frustration with a handful of routine hospital procedures. I wrote this post as I remembered it, in notes form. It just made more sense to me. I certainly wasn’t thinking in flowing, gorgeous prose as I labored. Here goes…

%20rejected%20for%20being%20too%20big.%20Can%E2%80%99t%20take%20it%20inside.%20I%20am%20whisked%20immediately%20to%20exam%20area%20while%20Husband%20waits%20outside%20in%20long%20line%20with%20my%20paperwork.%20I%20put%20robe%20on%20backwards%20per%20nurses%20advice,%20contract%20again%20&%20dilated%20to%209%20cm!%20Nurse%20takes%20all%20my%20belongings%20and%20eyeglasses%20and%20stuffs%20them%20in%20a%20plastic%20grocery%20sack.%20%20I%E2%80%99m%20blindly%20led%20to%20new%20%E2%80%9Cmaternity%E2%80%9D%20bed%20with%20pink%20sheets%20&%20told%20to%20lie%20down%20as%20Husband%20arrives.%20I%E2%80%99m%20rolled%20through%20hallways%20like%20a%20spectacle,%20hissing%20%E2%80%9CSssss%E2%80%9D%20through%20halls%20and%20up%20elevator%20holding%20husband%E2%80%99s%20hand.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENew%20nurse%20examines%20me,%20not%20letting%20Husband%20come%20in.%20She%20breaks%20my%20waters.%20Too%20much%20pain%20to%20say%20no.%20It%20hurts.%20Forced%20to%20lie%20on%20back%20for%20I.V.%20with%20saline%20solution.%20I%20don%E2%80%99t%20want%20it%20but%20they%20insist%20per%20hospital%20protocol.%20Bummer.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETold%20to%20warn%20nurse%20when%20need%20to%20push.%20She%20leaves.%20Warn%20almost%20immediately%20using%20half%20words%20half%20crazed%20pain-faced%20gesturing.%20Whisked%20away%20to%20room%20with%203%20huge%20spotlights%20and%20bed%20that%20sits%20up%20almost%20like%20a%20chair,%20the%20best%20option%20to%20hands%20and%20knees%20birthing%20position,%20which%20I%E2%80%99d%20written%20in%20birth%20plan%20(ignored).%20Made%20ME%20move%20from%20pink%20sheeted%20bed%20to%20birthing%20bed%20by%20myself.%20Ouch!%20Nurse%20promises%20to%20give%20me%20baby%20immediately.%20Told%20to%20push%20while%20holding%20breath.%20Not%20wanting%20to,%20but%20obliged%20to%20make%20the%20whole%20thing%20happen%20faster.%20Ouch%20again.%20Baby%E2%80%99s%20head%20out%20in%20about%203%20pushes,%20body%20next.%20Relief!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECan%E2%80%99t%20see,%20ask%20for%20glasses%20from%20Husband,%20but%20supernaturally%20saw%20the%20baby%20slide%20into%20Dr.%E2%80%99s%20hands%20&%20be%20carried%20to%20washing%20area%20(%20I%20asked%20Husband%20to%20confirm%20when%20he%20handed%20me%20the%20glasses.%20It%20was%20indeed%20a%20miracle!)%20Baby%20with%20nurses%20an%20unusually%20long%20amount%20of%20time,%20though%20Apgar%20scored%209%20both%20at%20one%20and%20five%20minutes.%206%20pounds%2010%20oz.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBeg%20for%20baby.%20Beg%20more.%20Baby%20comes,%20crying%20and%20cute.%20Take%20smartphone%20pics%20of%20Husband%20with%20baby%20and%20he%20of%20us.%20Nurse%20stitches%20me%20up%20with%20local%20anesthetic,%20much%20less%20painful%20than%20birth.%20Ouch.%20Nurse%20jokes%20about%20next%20baby.%20I%20ask%20her%20about%20her%20own%20next%20baby.%20She%20laughs.%20Give%20me%20Pitocin%20in%202%20doses.%20Bleeding%20stops%20as%20I%E2%80%99m%20stitched.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThey%20make%20me%20switch%20beds%20again%20and%20wheel%20me%20back%20into%20the%20I%E2%80%99m-about-to-give-birth%20area%20and%20feed%20me%20a%20substantial%20beef%20and%20veggie%20picadillo.%20My%20bed%20doesn%E2%80%99t%20sit%20up,%20so%20I%E2%80%99m%20forced%20to%20sit%20up%20of%20my%20own%20accord%20with%20no%20propping.%20Not%20super%20comfy,%20but%20I%E2%80%99m%20grateful%20to%20God%20for%20a%20healthy%20son,%20healthy%20body,%20and%20doting%20husband%20that%20make%20everything%20alright.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOf%20course,%20there%E2%80%99s%20more%20to%20the%20story%20of%20my%2024%20required%20hours%20in%20the%20hospital,%20but%20that%E2%80%99s%20a%20whole%20%E2%80%98nother%20post.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFollow%20on%20G+%20%7C%20Like%20on%20Facebook%20%7C%20Tweet%20with%20me%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
