3 c. strained applesauce, sweetened or possibly unsweetened 1 c. shortening 4 1/2 c. flour 2 c. sugar 4 teaspoon soda 1 teaspoon nutmeg

2 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon cloves 1 teaspoon salt 1 pound dates 1 pound raisins 1/4 pound each of nuts, candied cherries, pineapple and citron

1. Boil together for 5 min the applesauce, sugar and shortening. Let stand overnight. Dredge minced fruit and nuts with flour, soda, salt and spices, that have been sifted together.
2. Bake in lined pans in a slow 250 degree oven for 2 1/2 hrs or possibly till done. Fill pans about 2/3 full. Makes 5 loaves.
