When my mother passed away, in October 2002, we held an Oktoberfest memorial service for her. To know my Mutti, she loved a party, loved to dance, and thrived at being the center of attention.
Rather than having a somber service, we had a fully catered German buffet with Bavarian music playing. I think she would have been very pleased with that.

Since then, I have hosted an annual Oktoberfest, for my immediate family, as a way to honor our Mutti's memory. Being the only daughter, it looks like I'm the one to carry on my mother's traditional Bavarian recipes-- that includes her Austrian Goulash, Semmel Knoedel, German potato salad and homemade spaetzle.

%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20learned%20that%20by%20placing%20a%20sheet%20of%20puff%20pastry%20on%20top%20of%20a%20lightly%20floured%20sheet%20of%20parchment%20paper,%20it's%20very%20easy%20to%20roll%20the%20dough%20around%20the%20fruit%20filling.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20rolling%20the%20puff%20pastry%20sheet%20into%20a%20rectangle%20(sorry,%20I%20don't%20measure%20but%20I%20gently%20rolled%20it%20until%20the%20%22wrinkles%22%20were%20worked%20out%20and%20not%20too%20paper%20thin).%20%20I%20then%20brushed%20melted%20butter%20over%20the%20puff%20pastry%20sheet%20and%20I%20added%20a%20thin%20layer%20of%20sour%20cream.%20%20My%20cousin%20explained%20that%20her%20mother%20did%20this%20for%20decades,%20and%20her%20filling%20was%20never%20dry.%20%20So,%20that's%20what%20I%20did.%20In%20the%20top%20right%20photo%20collage%20(below)%20you%20might%20see%20that%20I%20simply%20lifted%20the%20parchment%20paper%20and%20used%20it%20to%20roll%20the%20left%20side%20of%20the%20dough%20on%20top%20of%20the%20filling.%20%20I%20then%20lifted%20the%20opposite%20side%20of%20the%20parchment%20paper%20to%20close%20the%20dough.%20%20I%20pressed%20together%20the%20seams,%20and%20use%20the%20paper%20to%20gently%20roll%20the%20strudel%20over,%20seam%20sides%20down.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOur%20doorbell%20rang,%20with%20the%20arrival%20of%20my%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Etwo%20brothers.%20%20So,%20I%20placed%20the%20apple%20strudel%20into%20the%20refrigerator%20to%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ekeep%20the%20puff%20pastry%20nice%20and%20cold,%20and%20to%20get%20the%20party%20started.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJust%20before%20I%20was%20ready%20to%20set%20all%20of%20the%20German%20entrees%20and%20side%20dishes%20on%20the%20table,%20I%20whisked%20an%20egg%20with%20a%20little%20water--%20then%20cut%20a%20few%20slits%20on%20top%20of%20the%20pastry%20and%20sprinkled%20some%20coarse%20sanding%20sugar%20and%20baked%20it%20at%20400F%20for%2035-45%20minutes,%20or%20until%20golden%20brown.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHere%20is%20the%20strudel,%20fresh%20from%20the%20oven.%20%20I%20set%20them%20on%20a%20cooling%20rack,%20while%20our%20guests%20enjoyed%20dinner%20and%20plenty%20of%20German%20beer.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENightfall%20had%20already%20happened,%20by%20the%20time%20we%20got%20around%20to%20having%20dessert,%20so%20the%20ideal%20light%20for%20photography%20was%20gone,%20I%20am%20sorry%20to%20say.%20%20As%20I%20sliced%20into%20the%20warm%20apple%20strudel,%20I%20noticed%20that%20the%20apples%20were%20thoroughly%20cooked%20and%20the%20filling%20wasn't%20runny.%20%20(Big%20sigh%20of%20relief.)%20I%20dusted%20this%20slice%20with%20powdered%20sugar...%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut,%20fresh%20whipped%20cream%20is%20one%20of%20my%20favorite%20garnishes%20with%20apple%20strudel.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETASTING%20NOTES:%20Puff%20pastry%20is%20perfect%20as%20a%20substitute%20for%20making%20homemade%20dough.%20It's%20light%20and%20buttery.%20I%20only%20used%20a%20couple%20of%20teaspoons%20of%20cinnamon,%20and%20that%20worked%20well%20for%20me.%20Serving%20this%20room%20temperature%20(or%20just%20warm)%20is%20the%20ideal%20way%20to%20enjoy%20this%20dessert.%20%20The%20next%20day,%20it's%20still%20good%20but%20the%20pastry%20seems%20to%20get%20a%20bit%20tougher.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo,%20here%20I%20am--%20wearing%20my%20Mutti's%20red%20hat%20and%20her%20choker%20necklace.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E...and%20here%20is%20my%20Mutti,%20wearing%20that%20very%20red%20hat.%20%20See%20what%20I%20mean?%20She%20loved%20a%20good%20party%20and%20loved%20to%20ham%20it%20up%20for%20a%20camera.%20%20Prost,%20Mutti!%20%20I%20hope%20I%20made%20you%20proud!%20We%20had%20a%20great%20Oktoberfest,%20as%20always.%20Making%20all%20the%20Bavarian%20dishes%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ethat%20my%20family%20loves%20was%20met%20with%20heartfelt%20thanks%20and%20appreciation.%20%20I%20only%20wish%20my%20Mutti%20had%20been%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eable%20to%20enjoy%20the%20recipes%20that%20she%20taught%20me%20how%20to%20make.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGuten%20apetit!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
