Soak the dal in water for overnight. Then pressure cook the dal with salt until they are soft and almost mushy.

In a pan add 2 Tbsp of butter and 1/2 Tbsp of oil. Once it is hot, add all the whole garam masala - cardamoms, bay leaves, cloves and cinnamon stick. Once they start sizzling and become plump; remove them from oil.

Then add the onions and ginger garlic paste. Saute until the onions become golden brown.

Then add the tomato puree and cook until the raw smell goes off.

Add the chilli powder and garam masala powder. Fry them for a minute.

Then add the cooked dal and some of the water.

Keep stirring and mash the lentils with the back of the laddle.

Keep the flame low and simmer it for about 30 minutes. Keep stirring and mashing in between and add water as and when needed.

As you keep stirring it becomes creamy and thick. Check for salt and adjust.

Finally before switching off add the cream and kasuri methi. Turn off and serve it with naan or roti or rice.
