.%20Have%20any%20of%20you%20ever%20seen%20this%20stuff?%20I've%20served%20it%20before,%20really%20as%20a%20novelty,%20because%20it's%20just%20so%20darn%20cute!!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWhen%20you%20pull%20the%20florets%20off%20the%20main%20head%20they%20look%20like%20little%20Christmas%20trees..%20could%20you%20just%20die?%20Is%20it%20just%20me%20or%20is%20that%20the%20coolest%20looking%20vegetable%20around?%20You%20cook%20the%20Romanesque%20Broccoli%20the%20same%20way%20you%20would%20regular%20broccoli%20-%20only%20just%20a%20tad%20time%20shorter%20-%20it%20is%20more%20delicate%20and%20less%20woody%20than%20traditional%20broccoli.%20Romanesque%20B%20is%20also%20excellent%20in%20crudites%20because%20of%20its%20more%20tender%20sensibilities.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELet's%20move%20on%20to%20those%20berries!%20Blueberries,%20gooseberries%20and%20currants,%20oh%20my!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBlueberries%20-%20well%20don't%20we%20all%20know%20about%20these%20little%20gems?%20They%20are%20an%20excellent%20source%20of%20vitamin%20C%20which%20aids%20in%20the%20absorption%20of%20iron%20and%20promotes%20a%20healthy%20immune%20system.%20Blueberries%20are%20also%20a%20good%20source%20of%20dietary%20fiber%20AND%20have%20recently%20been%20recognized%20as%20an%20amazing%20source%20of%20antioxidants.%20You%20can%20eat%20blueberries%20'out%20of%20hand',%20throw%20some%20into%20your%20breakfast%20cereal,%20bake%20them%20into%20muffins,%20coffee%20cakes%20and%20pies,%20or%20throw%20a%20handful%20into%20your%20pancake%20batter.%20Blueberries%20freeze%20beautifully%20and%20keep%20up%20to%206%20months.%20Who%20wouldn't%20die%20for%20local%20grown%20blueberries%20stuffed%20into%20a%20muffin%20in%20mid-December?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFresh%20Currants%20are%20new%20to%20me%20as%20I%20have%20only%20ever%20worked%20with%20the%20dried%20variety.%20Currants%20are%20a%20member%20of%20the%20gooseberry%20family.%20Currants%20are%20an%20excellent%20source%20of%20anthocyanins%20which%20are%20thought%20to%20reduce%20inflammation.%20In%20addition,%20the%20antioxidants%20in%20currants%20are%20thought%20to%20help%20promote%20heathy%20aging%20and%20neurological%20functions%20and%20recent%20studies%20seem%20to%20suggest%20they%20can%20protect%20against%20Alzheimer's%20disease.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20question%20is%20then,%20what%20should%20I%20do%20with%20my%20currants?%20I%20could%20bake%20them%20into%20some%20scones%20for%20a%20lovely%20Friday%20afternoon%20tea,%20squeeze%20the%20juice%20out%20and%20create%20a%20refreshing%20Friday%20evening%20cocktail%20or%20really%20get%20down%20to%20it%20and%20make%20the%20famous%20French%20preserve,%20Bar%20de%20Luc.%20But%20alas,%20I%20don't%20have%20the%20required%20goose%20quill%20to%20remove%20the%20seeds%20by%20hand%20(nor%20the%20patience).%20Perhaps%20a%20few%20tossed%20into%20a%20salad%20dressing,%20sweetened%20just%20barely%20with%20a%20touch%20of%20honey?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20brings%20us%20to%20the%20gooseberries.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGooseberries%20(and%20blueberries%20and%20currants)%20should%20be%20available%20from%20now%20until%20mid-July.%20Like%20blueberries,%20they%20are%20an%20excellent%20source%20of%20vitamin%20C.%20They%20freeze%20well%20and%20do%20well%20preserved.%20In%20the%20sixteenth%20century%20gooseberries%20were%20used%20to%20treat%20plague%20victims%20as%20the%20juice%20has%20been%20known%20to%20reduce%20fever.%20Since%20no%20one%20has%20the%20plague%20in%20my%20house%20I%20think%20I'm%20going%20to%20make%20mine%20into%20a%20whole%20berry%20sauce%20that%20will%20compliment%20a%20pork%20loin%20this%20weekend.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHow%20about%20you?%20What%20will%20you%20do%20with%20the%20berries%20that%20are%20all%20coming%20into%20the%20market?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGooseberry%20Sauce:%20(this%20is%20much%20like%20a%20whole%20berry%20cranberry%20sauce%20you%20would%20serve%20at%20Thanksgiving)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1/2%20pint%20Gooseberries,%20washed%20and%20stems%20removed%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1/4%20cup%20water%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E3%20tablespoons%20sugar%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Erind%20of%20one%20orange%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBring%20water%20to%20boil%20and%20add%20sugar.%20Stir%20to%20dissolve%20sugar%20and%20maintain%20boil.%20Add%20Gooseberries%20and%20orange%20rind.%20Continue%20to%20cook%20at%20a%20high%20simmer%20until%20berries%20are%20soft%20and%20split%20open.%20You%20can%20pass%20through%20a%20sieve%20or%20keep%20whole.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EExcellent%20with%20poultry%20or%20pork.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDon't%20forget,%20send%20me%20your%20fresh%20market%20questions%20and%20I'll%20post%20answers%20on%20Monday%20in%20my%20Ask%20Me%20Monday%20post.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHappy%20Weekend!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
