.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Husband%20made%20Creole%20Vegetable%20Soup%20(from%20Tony%20Chachere's%20Cajun%20Country%20Cookbook)%20for%20me%20years%20ago%20when%20I%20had%20my%20wisdom%20teeth%20out.%20%20He%20called%20his%20dad%20to%20get%20the%20recipe.%20%20I%20still%20have%20it%20scribbled%20somewhere.%20%20Chopped%20everything%20itty%20bitty%20knowing%20my%20condition.%20%20Worked%20all%20day%20while%20I%20was%20passed%20out%20on%20codeine.%20%20For%20true.%20%20It%20makes%20me%20faint.%20%20He%20chopped,%20boiled,%20shredded,%20simmered.%20%20And%20then%20we%20ate.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen%20I%20ran%20to%20the%20bathroom.%20%20Apparently%20codeine%20makes%20me%20puke%20too.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20took%20a%20while%20to%20shake%20the%20teasing%20that%20followed.%20%20Both%20of%20us.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20in%20my%20house%20Tony's%20Creole%20Vegetable%20Soup%20will%20always%20and%20forever%20be%20known%20as%20Wisdom%20Tooth%20Soup.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECould%20be%20worse.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMise%20en%20place%20for%20Wisdom%20Tooth%20Soup%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20stock:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E2%20lb%20beef%20brisket,%201%20onion,%202%20ribs%20celery,%201%20large%20Irish%20potato,%201%20turnip,%20Tony's,%20water%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFor%20the%20soup:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E1%20can%20tomatoes,%20chopped%20cabbage,%203%20carrots,%201%20turnip,%202%20ribs%20celery,%20small%20onion,%20medium%20Irish%20potato,%20parsley,%201%20can%20corn,%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eleftover%20cooked%20rice%20&%20spaghetti%20or%20other%20pasta%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20soup%20has%20a%20couple%20of%20nifty%20tricks%20up%20its%20sleeve.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20first%20step%20is%20to%20simmer%20the%20brisket%20with%20celery,%20onion,%20and%20potato.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20like%20a%20recipe%20that%20has%20its%20own%20stock%20built%20in.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EStore-bought%20costs%20more%20and%20isn't%20nearly%20as%20good.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd%20I%20have%20this%20leeetle%20problem%20of%20not%20wanting%20to%20use%20the%20stock%20I%20have%20hidden%20under%20lock%20and%20key%20in%20my%20freezer.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20next%20step%20is%20to%20remove%20the%20brisket%20and%20chop%20into%20pieces%20or%20shred.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThen%20the%20liquid%20and%20cooked%20vegetables%20get%20passed%20through%20a%20strainer%20(reserve%20liquid).%20%20Mash%20the%20veg,%20pushing%20it%20through%20the%20colander.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirty%20work.%20%20I%20know.%20%20I%20know.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBut%20this%20potato-onion-etc%20mash%20will%20help%20thicken%20the%20soup.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENeat%20trick%20to%20give%20a%20soup%20body.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEverybody%20in.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDo%20you%20compulsively%20save%20bits%20and%20dabs%20and%20dollops%20of%20random%20foodstuffs?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBits%20and%20dabs%20and%20dollops%20that%20aren't%20enough%20for%20much?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20original%20recipe%20calls%20for%20raw%20rice%20and%20broken,%20uncooked%20spaghetti%20to%20be%20cooked%20in%20the%20soup%20at%20the%20end.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt's%20hard%20to%20time%20everything%20so%20that%20the%20rice%20isn't%20crunchy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20pasta%20not%20mushy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20vegetables%20not%20falling%20apart.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThis%20is%20what%20my%20bits%20and%20dabs%20and%20dollops%20have%20been%20waiting%20for!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EJust%20before%20serving,%20add%20as%20much%20or%20as%20little%20leftover%20cooked%20rice%20and%20pasta%20as%20you%20want%20to%20the%20bottom%20of%20a%20bowl.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELadle%20on%20the%20soup.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENothin'%20left%20but%20the%20eatin'!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWisdom%20Tooth%20Soup%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECreole%20Vegetable%20Soup%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Eslightly%20adapted%20from%20Tony%20Chachere's%20Cajun%20Country%20Cookbook%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIn%20a%20large%20covered%20pot,%20add%20the%20meat,%20halved%20or%20quartered%20onion,%20potato,%20celery,%20and%20turnip%20to%20water%20seasoned%20with%20Tony's.%20%20Bring%20to%20a%20boil.%20%20Simmer%20for%203%20hours%20or%20longer.%20Take%20soup%20meat%20from%20pot%20and%20remove%20meat%20from%20bone.%20Chop%20into%20bite-size%20pieces,%20discarding%20bone%20and%20fat.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMash%20well-cooked%20vegetables%20through%20a%20strainer.%20Return%20these%20ingredients,%20with%20meat,%20to%20the%20liquid.%20Add%20all%20other%20vegetables%20and%20simmer%20until%20vegetables%20are%20done%20to%20your%20liking%20(I%20usually%20let%20it%20simmer%20for%20about%202-2.5%20hours).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20serve,%20add%20as%20much%20leftover%20cooked%20rice%20and%20pasta%20as%20you%20want%20to%20a%20bowl.%20%20Ladle%20on%20the%20soup.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E*%20normally%20I%20skip%20the%20turnip,%20but%20today%20I%20used%20it%20just%20for%20you!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELinked%20to:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFeb%201%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
