%20in%20town:%20the%20Thomas%20Hooker%20Brewing%20Company%20Open%20House.%20Happening%20on%20the%201st%20and%203rd%20Fridays%20of%20every%20month%20from%205-8,%20this%20happy%20hour%20shindig%20takes%20place%20right%20in%20the%20brewery%20in%20Bloomfield,%20Connecticut%20and%20costs%20a%20mere%20$10.%20In%20exchange%20for%20your%20tenner,%20you%20get%20a%20little%20plastic%20cup%20and%20access%20to%20two%20bars,%20with%20four%20taps%20each,%20flowing%20freely%20with%20the%20freshest%20beer%20around.%20There%20are%20pizza%20slices%20on%20sale%20(proceeds%20go%20to%20charity)%20for%20when%20you%20need%20sustenance,%20and%20oh,%20did%20we%20mention%20you%20get%20to%20take%20home%20a%20souvenir%20pint%20glass?%20Hollah!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EOn%20this%20particular%20Friday,%20the%20beer%20everyone%20was%20buzzing%20about%20was%20Hooker's%20brand%20new%20seasonal%20brew%20made%20with%20another%20Connecticut%20favorite,%20Munson's%20Chocolates.%20Hooker%20is%20using%20Munson's%20proprietary%20cocoa%20blend%20to%20create%20a%20smooth,%20luscious%20%22Chocolate%20Truffle%20Stout%22%20that%20is%20a%20dark,%20delicious,%20easily%20drinkable%20beer%20with%20hints%20of%20chocolate%20and%20coffee%20and%20a%20surprising%20lack%20of%20bitterness.%20We%20loved%20it%20so%20much,%20we%20purchased%20a%20growler%20($11%20new,%20$8%20to%20refill)%20with%20every%20intent%20to%20use%20it%20in%20our%20cooking.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EWash,%20slice%20and%20dice%20the%20veggies.%20Aren't%20those%20purple%20carrots%20gorgeous?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESeason,%20flour%20and%20brown%20the%20roast%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ELet%20the%20roasting%20magic%20happen%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20very%20next%20morning%20it%20was%20starting%20to%20snow.%20Undeterred,%20we%20carefully%20drove%20to%20the%20nearest%20market%20where%20we%20picked%20up%20a%204-pound%20spoon%20roast%20(a%20top%20sirloin%20cut)%20and%20some%20vegetables.%20That%20afternoon,%20we%20seasoned,%20seared%20and%20cooked%20the%20roast%20and%20veggies%20in%20a%20cup%20of%20the%20chocolate%20stout%20and%20served%20it%20with%20creamy%20mashed%20potatoes%20(with%20a%20pint%20of%20stout%20to%20wash%20it%20down%20with,%20naturally).%20While%20the%20wonderful%20chocolate%20flavor%20of%20the%20beer%20wasn't%20very%20pronounced%20in%20the%20dish,%20the%20meat%20was%20especially%20tender%20and%20the%20carrots,%20celery%20and%20onions%20had%20a%20dark%20flavor%20and%20color%20that%20we%20could%20only%20attibute%20to%20the%20stout.%20Now%20what%20to%20do%20with%20the%20leftovers?%20Check%20back%20in%20a%20couple%20of%20days%20for%20our%20own%20%22Chocolate%20Stout%20Chili.%22%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHooker%20Brewer%20is%20located%20at%2016%20Tobey%20Road%20in%20Bloomfield,%20CT.%20They%20also%20have%20tours%20and%20tastings%20on%20Saturdays.%20Their%20Chocolate%20Truffle%20Stout%20should%20be%20hitting%20grocery%20and%20liquor%20store%20shelves%20in%20the%20beginning%20of%20February,%20just%20in%20time%20for%20Valentine's%20Day.%20Drink%20local!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChocolate%20Stout%20Spoon%20Roast%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPreheat%20oven%20to%20425%20degrees.%20Season%20the%20roast%20with%20salt%20and%20pepper%20and%20sprinkle%20it%20all%20over%20with%20flour.%20Heat%20olive%20oil%20in%20a%20roasting%20pan%20and%20sear%20the%20roast%20on%20all%20sides%20until%20nicely%20browned.%20Remove%20roast%20and%20set%20aside.%20Place%20vegetables%20in%20the%20pan%20and%20saute%20for%20a%20minute%20or%20two,%20until%20onions%20start%20to%20caramelize.%20Return%20the%20roast%20to%20the%20pan,%20on%20top%20of%20the%20vegetables.%20Pour%20the%20stout%20into%20the%20pan.%20Cook%20at%20425%20for%2015%20minutes.%20Turn%20heat%20down%20to%20325;%20cover%20or%20tent%20pan%20with%20aluminum%20foil%20and%20continue%20to%20roast%20at%20325%20for%20one%20hour,%20or%20until%20internal%20temperature%20reaches%20130%20for%20medium%20rare.%20Remove%20roast%20from%20pan%20and%20allow%20to%20rest%20for%2010%20minutes%20before%20slicing%20and%20serving.%20In%20the%20meantime,%20stir%20the%20vegetables%20and%20stout%20and%20continue%20to%20cook%20to%20reduce%20and%20thicken%20slightly.%20Serve%20vegetables%20on%20the%20side%20of%20slices%20of%20roast%20topped%20with%20%22stout%20gravy.%22%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
