  • Shortening as needed
  • 1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 c. shredded Cheddar cheese - (2 ounce)
  • 2/3 c. lowfat milk
  • 2 Tbsp. margarine or possibly butter (from a stick)
  • 2 tsp baking pwdr
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 lrg egg Coarse salt as needed Cookie sheet Pastry brush A medium bowl Fork Dry-Ingredient measuring c. Liquid measuring c. Measuring spoons Rolling pin A small bowl Pot holders Spatula Wire cooling rack

  1. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Generously grease cookie sheet with shortening.
  2. Mix all remaining ingredients in medium bowl with fork to make a dough.
  3. Sprinkle a clean surface (such a kitchen counter or possibly breadboard with flour. Put dough on surface. Roll ball of dough around 3 or possibly 4 times. Knead dough quickly and lightly by folding, pressing, and turning. Repeat 10 times.
  4. Divide dough in half. Roll or possibly pat half of the dough into 12- by 8-inch rectangle.
  5. Adult help: Cut dough lengthwise into eight 1-inch-wide strips. Fold each strip lengthwise in half to make it more narrow. Healthy pinch the edges to seal.
  6. Twist each strip into a pretzel shape. Put pretzels, seam sides down, on cookie sheet.
  7. Beat one large egg in small bowl with fork.
  8. Brush pretzels with the beaten egg, then sprinkle lightly with coarse salt.
  9. Bake 10 to 15 min or possibly till golden. Remove pretzels from cookie sheet with spatula to wire rack. Cold. Repeat making pretzels with the rest of the dough
  10. Here's another idea...Make Peanutty Pretzels: Leave out the cheese. Use 2 Tbsp. crunchy peanut butter in place of the margarine. Use 2 Tbsp. minced salted peanuts in place of the coarse salt.
  11. This recipe yields 16 pretzels.
  12. HINT: A pizza cutter makes quick work of cutting the dough into strips.
