  • 1 x French or possibly Italian bread loaf - (8" long) cut 1/2"-thk slices
  • 1 c. lowfat milk
  • 2 c. tomato sauce, fresh or possibly jarred
  • 8 ounce grated or possibly sliced Fontina or possibly Mozzarella cheese - (to 1 lb)
  • 4 ounce smoked Black Forest ham torn into strips
  • 4 x Large eggs lightly beaten
  • 1/4 c. freshly-grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 Tbsp. butter cut into pcs Salt to taste Freshly-grnd black pepper to taste

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Soak the bread in the lowfat milk for 15 min. Line the bottom of a 2- to 2 1/2-qt shallow casserole with a layer of bread soaked bread. Top with a layer of tomato sauce and mozzarella and some strips of ham. Continue layering, finishing last layer with bread topped with tomato sauce.
  3. Beat the Large eggs with Parmesan and pour the mix over the bread. With a fork, pierce through layers till egg mix is absorbed by bread. Dot the top with butter and bake for 45 min or possibly till top if browned and puffed.
  4. While this is baking make a nice vegetable salad to accompany this dish.
  5. This recipe yields 4 servings.
