- Today is also St. Joseph"s Day. Celebrated by many as a break from lent, this holiday started as a Thanksgiving celebration for the end of a drought in Italy. To celebrate, the rich set out a meatless feast for the poor.
- Today, some Italian-American families keep up the custom by inviting relatives and close friends to the St. Joseph"s Day feast. Since the feast falls during Lent, no meat is served. A typical meal begins with
- "minestrone St. Joseph-style." A "dry" spaghetti, dressed with bread crumbs, raisins and walnuts, is typical. Several fish courses served include favorites such as: baccala; smelts deep fried in egg batter and flour; fried eels; and spaghetti with anchovies.

- Beat Large eggs, salt sugar, oil, and vanilla together and work in the flour and water alternately keeping the mix smooth till dough is stiff.
