I was lucky enough to check out Social Bar, a casual and classic American eatery in the Theater District last night and have to say that it serves a cut above neighbor sports bar fare—actually, several cuts above. Social Bar calls itself an Irish pub on its official website but I saw only one or two pub-style dishes on the menu (the Dubliner Irish Burger and Fish & Chips). Everything is prepared fresh and I dare say that their fries are a contender for one of the Best In Manhattan! They are salty (in a good way) and seem to be fried in peanut oil for extra flavor.

.%20Everything%20is%20prepared%20fresh%20and%20I%20dare%20say%20that%20their%20fries%20are%20a%20contender%20for%20one%20of%20the%20Best%20In%20Manhattan!%20They%20are%20salty%20(in%20a%20good%20way)%20and%20seem%20to%20be%20fried%20in%20peanut%20oil%20for%20extra%20flavor.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDread%20Head%20cocktailI%20started%20out%20with%20the%20coconut%20and%20colorful%20Dread%20Head%20cocktail,%20which%20is%20only%20$5%20all%20day%20until%208PM%20and%20was%20impressed%20not%20only%20by%20its%20flavor%20how%20the%20green%20melon%20liqueur%20stayed%20at%20the%20bottom%20of%20the%20glass!%20My%20dining%20partner%20could%20not%20resist%20the%20cotton%20candy%20based%20Cotton%20Candy%20Cosmo%20(also%20$5),%20which%20started%20out%20pink%20and%20blue%20and%20then%20turned%20into%20a%20root%20beer-looking%20concoction%20once%20the%20booze%20was%20poured%20over%20the%20cotton%20candy.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECotton%20Candy%20Cosmo%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20then%20asked%20that%20all%20our%20dishes%20be%20brought%20out%20as%20they%20were%20made%20as%20opposed%20to%20having%20appetizers%20and%20entrees%20in%20proper%20order.%20I%20tried%20the%20Pulled%20Pork%20Sliders%20first%20($11%20for%20four%20medium%20sized%20sliders%20with%20those%20luscious%20fries)%20and%20found%20the%20pork%20to%20be%20tender%20and%20moist.%20They%20are%20served%20in%20a%20lot%20of%20medium-hot%20classic%20barbecue%20sauce,%20so%20those%20who%20like%20saucy%20pulled%20pork%20will%20love%20this%20menu%20item.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPulled%20Pork%20Sliders%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENext%20up%20was%20the%20large%20Southwestern%20Salad%20($10)%20featuring%20a%20mellow%20cilantro%20vinaigrette%20dressing%20and%20plenty%20of%20veggies%20including%20corn%20and%20avocado%20with%20the%20wild%20greens%20that%20make%20up%20the%20bulk%20of%20the%20salad.%20I%20loved%20the%20subtle%20cilantro%20taste%20of%20the%20dressing,%20the%20perfectly%20ripe%20grape%20tomatoes.%20The%20tri%20color%20tortilla%20strips%20tasted%20homemade%20and%20added%20a%20perfect%20crunch%20and%20saltiness%20to%20this%20wonderful%20salad.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESocial%20Burger%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20most%20popular%20item%20on%20the%20menu%20is%20the%20giant%208%20ounce%20Social%20Burger%20($12.50)%20and%20I%20always%20feel%20the%20need%20to%20try%20the%20most%20ordered%20item%20on%20any%20menu.%20This%20burger%20was%20done%20perfectly%20medium%20as%20I%20ordered%20it,%20and%20was%20topped%20with%20sweet%20Chili%20Glaze.%20avocado,%20papaya,%20tomato%20and%20red%20onion.%20If%20that%20was%20not%20good%20enough,%20it%20is%20topped%20with%20a%20killer%20goat%20cheese%20ginger%20mayonnaise.%20This%20is%20no%20ordinary%20pub%20burger%20my%20friend%E2%80%94it%20is%20big%20enough%20for%20two%20people%20to%20share%20as%20an%20entr%C3%A9e!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETraditional%20Arepa%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESocial%20Bar%20is%20not%20afraid%20to%20bring%20international%20cuisines%20to%20their%20mainly%20American%20menu,%20and%20the%20Traditional%20Arepa%20($10)%20is%20really%20done%20well%20with%20its%20saut%C3%A9ed%20garlic%20chicken%20with%20tomatoes%20on%20a%20Columbian%20style%20corn%20arepa.%20The%20Jalapeno%20puree%20that%20tops%20it%20is%20the%20real%20kicker%20to%20this%20dish,%20though.%20You%20can%20get%20shrimp%20substituted%20for%20the%20chicken%20for%20only%20$5%20more,%20by%20the%20way.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20love%20the%20trivia%20games%20that%20take%20place%20at%207PM%20at%20Social%20Bar%20as%20well%20as%20the%20friendly%20staff.%20I%20noticed%20a%20strong%20mix%20of%20clientele%20from%20families%20to%20people%20stopping%20after%20work%20to%20tourists%20from%20Australia%20sitting%20nearby.%20The%20atmosphere%20is%20very%20casual%20and%20friendly%20and%20the%20food%20comes%20quickly.%20Social%20bar%20appears%20to%20have%20become%20a%20bit%20of%20a%20neighborhood%20hangout%20because%20of%20these%20features,%20as%20well%20as%20the%20very%20reasonable%20prices.%20I%20was%20too%20full%20from%20the%20large%20portions%20served%20to%20try%20the%20desserts%20at%20Social%20Bar,%20but%20I%20will%20be%20stopping%20back%20in%20very%20soon%20to%20test%20them%20out.%20I%20will%20also%20be%20back%20to%20test%20out%20the%20highly%20acclaimed%20$7.95%20lunch%20special%20here.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESocial%20Bar%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E795%20Eighth%20Avenue%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ENew%20York,%20NY%2010019%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3E(212)%20459-0643%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3Ewww.socialbarnyc.com%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ECuisine:%20American%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPhotos:%20Anne%20M.%20Raso%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
