  • 1 pound caramels
  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix
  • 1/2 c. vegetable oil
  • 1/2 c. butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 c. water
  • 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed lowfat milk, divided
  • 1 c. minced pecans
  • 1/2 c. butter
  • 1/2 c. evaporated lowfat milk
  • 1/3 c. cocoa
  • 1 (16 ounce) box powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.2. Mix cake mix, oil, butter, water and half the sweetened condensed lowfat milk till well blended.
  2. Pour half the batter into a greased 9"x13"x2" cake pan. Bake 20 to 30 min.
  3. Unwrap caramels. In a double boiler heat caramels and remaining sweetened condensed lowfat milk. (Melting takes approximately 20 min, so begin when cake is put in oven.) Pour over warm cake layer. Sprinkle with minced pecans.
  4. Pour remaining batter on top and bake again for 30 to 40 min.
  5. To make frosting bring butter, evaporated lowfat milk and cocoa to a boil. Add in powdered sugar and vanilla. Beat till smooth.
  6. Spread warm frosting on warm cake. Serves 12 to 15. From Necessities and Temptations.
