%20(edited%20by%20Carleen%20Madigan%20and%20published%20by%20Storey%20Publishing,%20LLC),%20I%20quickly%20hopped%20on%20over%20to%20Amazon%20and%20placed%20my%20order.%20She%20was%20raving%20about%20how%20fantastic%20the%20book%20is,%20especially%20for%20those%20who%20don%E2%80%99t%20have%20acres%20and%20acres%20of%20land%20to%20turn%20into%20a%20farm.%20And%20although%20we%20have%20a%20decent%20amount%20of%20land%20here,%20we%20also%20could%20stand%20to%20use%20it%20a%20lot%20more%20efficiently!%20Because%20efficient%20use%20often%20becomes%20less%20work%20in%20the%20long%20run.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIt%20may%20sound%20crazy,%20but%20with%20efficient%20use%20of%20your%20backyard,%20you%20can%20raise%20all%20this%20and%20more%20(provided%20you%20live%20in%20the%20right%20zone%20and%20have%20favorable%20weather%20conditions).%20Bees,%20meat%20rabbits,%20herbs%20and%20other%20products%20are%20not%20included%20on%20the%20list%20above%20but%20you%E2%80%99d%20also%20have%20sufficient%20space%20to%20include%20them.%20Suggestions%20are%20also%20given%20for%20a%201/10th%20of%20an%20acre%20farm%20which%20would%20include%206%20chickens,%202%20bee%20hives,%20meat%20rabbits,%20an%20herb%20and%20vegetable%20garden,%20and%20fruit%20trees.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChapters%20include:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20Home%20Vegetable%20Garden%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBackyard%20Fruits%20and%20Nuts%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EEasy,%20Fragrant%20Herbs%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EHome-Grown%20Grains%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPoultry%20for%20Eggs%20and%20Meat%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMeat%20and%20Dairy%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFood%20from%20the%20Wild%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20fruit%20and%20vegetable%20gardening%20chapters%20are%20fairly%20thorough%20and%20covers%20most%20of%20the%20basic%20produce%20your%20family%20would%20consume.%20A%20few%20pages%20on%20luscious%20edible%20landscaping%20(p.%20115-124)%20are%20also%20included%20for%20those%20who%20would%20like%20to%20consider%20planting%20their%20front%20yard%20with%20pretty%20yet%20edible%20plants%20which%20won%E2%80%99t%20make%20their%20yard%20look%20like%20a%20garden%20plot.%20Information%20about%20preserving%20and%20preparing%20various%20fruits%20and%20vegetables%20are%20also%20sprinkled%20within%20the%20pages.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20herb%20chapter%20includes%20a%20list%20of%2032%20essential%20herbs%20for%20culinary%20and%20medical%20uses%20as%20well%20as%20ways%20to%20dry%20and%20prepare%20herbs%20for%20teas,%20tinctures,%20vinegars,%20etc.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGrains%20are%20discussed%20over%2040%20pages%20and%20the%20primary%20focus%20is%20on%20wheat%20and%20corn.%20Harvesting%20and%20cooking%20grains,%20bread%20baking%20and%20beer%20and%20barley%20malt%20making%20are%20also%20covered.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EChickens%20get%20about%2020%20pages%20devoted%20to%20them,%20including%20simple%20plans%20for%20a%20chicken%20coop.%20You%20will%20also%20find%20a%20reference%20chart%20(p.%20349-352)%20in%20the%20back%20which%20lists%20regulations%20for%20keeping%20chickens%20in%20most%20major%20U.S.%20cities.%20Turkeys,%20geese%20and%20ducks%20also%20have%20sections%20devoted%20to%20them%20which%20discuss%20breeds,%20special%20needs%20and%20culling%20techniques.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EGoats,%20sheep%20and%20cows%20are%20considered%20for%20meat%20and%20milk%20productions.%20Goats%20get%20the%20primary%20focus,%20including%20goat%20milk%20recipes,%20because%20they%20are%20generally%20easier%20to%20raise%20and%20do%20not%20need%20nearly%20as%20much%20space%20as%20cattle.%20Pigs%20are%20also%20discussed%20for%20meat%20purposes%20and%20a%20few%20pages%20on%20sausages,%20packaging,%20processing%20and%20smoking%20meats%20are%20included.%20Diagrams%20of%20each%20animal%20are%20provided%20which%20show%20the%20cuts%20of%20the%20animals%20for%20butchering.%20Rabbits%20for%20meat%20and%20fur%20are%20discussed%20on%202%20pages%20which%20barely%20even%20scratches%20the%20surface%20(look%20at%20Raising%20Rabbits%20to%20Survive!%20if%20you%E2%80%99re%20interested%20in%20this%20subject).%20Topics%20like%20making%20cheese,%20yogurt%20and%20butter%20are%20all%20discussed%20in%20this%20chapter%20as%20well.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EFood%20from%20the%20wild%20is%20covered%20in%20about%2015%20pages%20and%20includes%20bees,%20foraging%20and%20making%20maple%20syrup.%20There%E2%80%99s%20only%20a%20very%20brief%20mention%20of%20collecting%20wild%20mushrooms%20in%20the%20chapter%20overview%20but%20no%20discussion%20about%20growing%20your%20own.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20book%20is%20a%20wealth%20of%20information%20and%20while%20it%20does%20cover%20a%20majority%20of%20subjects%20needed%20to%20become%20a%20self-sufficient%20homesteader,%20there%20are%20some%20topics%20which%20are%20just%20not%20covered%20deeply%20enough.%20I%20suspect%20that%20one%20of%20the%20goals%20of%20the%20book%20is%20to%20sell%20more%20Storey%20publications%20considering%20that%20there%20are%20MANY%20of%20them%20which%20cover%20every%20homesteading%20practice%20you%20can%20think%20of.%20Page%20354%20of%20The%20Backyard%20Homestead%20indicates%20that%20many%20of%20the%20sections%20are%20excerpts%20from%20other%20Storey%20titles%20which%20would%20explain%20why%20there%20is%20no%20author%20of%20this%20book;%20only%20an%20editor.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20will%20not%20overlook%20the%20fact%20that%20it%20is%20very%20hard%20to%20be%20an%20authority%20on%20everything%20in%20just%20one%20book.%20Especially%20a%20368-page%20publication%20with%20large%20typesetting%20and%20lots%20of%20illustrations.%20If%20you%20ARE%20looking%20for%20the%20ultimate%20resource%20on%20homesteading,%20I%20recommend%20The%20Encyclopedia%20of%20Country%20Living%20(available%20at%20Amazon.com%20and%20Amazon.de)%20and/or%20The%20Self-Sufficient%20Life%20and%20How%20to%20Live%20It%20by%20John%20Seymour%20(available%20at%20Amazon.com%20and%20Amazon.de).%20%20Both%20books%20provide%20a%20lot%20more%20information%20in%20just%20one%20volume%20and%20leave%20very%20few%20things%20to%20be%20further%20researched.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20definitely%20recommend%20this%20book%20to%20any%20new%20homesteader%20and%20those%20who%20are%20dying%20to%20start%20providing%20a%20clean%20and%20healthy%20food%20source%20for%20their%20families%20in%20suburbia.%20It%E2%80%99s%20easy%20to%20read%20and%20understand;%20the%20illustrations,%20charts%20and%20diagrams%20are%20fantastic;%20and%20the%20book%20really%20promotes%20an%20enthusiastic%20excitement%20about%20homesteading.%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
