.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ESo%20I%20was%20delighted%20when%20the%20week's%20%22assignment%22%20from%20Sherri%20Brooks%20Vinton's%20Put%20'Em%20Up%20Fruit%20for%20the%20From%20Scratch%20Club's%20virtual%20book%20club%20turned%20out%20to%20include%20blueberries.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBooyah.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20already%20put%20up%20some%20of%20what%20I'm%20calling%20Black%20and%20Blue%20Jam%20this%20year,%20using%20the%20aforementioned%20blueberries%20and%20a%20boatload%20of%20wild%20black%20raspberries%20foraged%20from%20the%20edges%20of%20our%20woods,%20so%20I%20wanted%20to%20try%20something%20other%20than%20jam.%20Behold:%20Sherri's%20book%20offered%20up%20blueberry%20vinegar!%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EI%20was%20hesitant%20at%20first%20because%20I%20wasn't%20sure%20how%20I%20would%20use%20blueberry%20vinegar.%20Sure,%20it%20would%20make%20a%20delightful%20vinaigrette,%20but%20how%20many%20fruity%20salads%20could%20I%20count%20on%20eating?%20I%20took%20the%20plunge%20when%20I%20read%20that%20the%20vinegar%20could%20also%20be%20used%20to%20make%20a%20refreshing%20blueberry%20shrub.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAre%20you%20familiar%20with%20shrubs?%20An%20old%20staple%20--%20back%20from%20the%20Colonial%20days%20when%20soda%20and%20lattes%20weren't%20options%20--%20shrubs%20are%20a%20bit%20of%20flavored%20vinegar%20(2%20tablespoons%20in%20a%20tall%20glass)%20mixed%20with%20water%20(in%20this%20case,%20seltzer),%20which%20yields%20a%20surprisingly%20refreshing%20beverage.%20Vinegar.%20In%20a%20beverage.%20Who%20knew?%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20vinegar%20couldn't%20be%20simpler%20to%20make%20(see%20recipe%20below)%20and%20it%20makes%20enough%20so%20that%20you%20can%20share%20it%20with%20a%20lucky%20friend.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAnd,%20of%20course,%20what%20with%20The%20Ninj%20being%20The%20Ninj,%20I'm%20planning%20to%20throw%20some%20vodka%20in%20there%20and%20see%20what%20a%20shrubby%20cocktail%20tastes%20like.%20I'll%20keep%20you%20posted.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDo%20you%20make%20flavored%20vinegars?%20What's%20your%20favorite?%20Leave%20a%20comment:%20The%20Ninj%20wants%20to%20know.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EBlueberry%20Vinegar%20(from%20Sherri%20Brooks%20Vinton's%20Put%20'Em%20Up%20Fruit)%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EIngredients:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EDirections:%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EPlace%20a%20quart%20canning%20jar%20in%20a%20pot%20of%20nearly-boiling%20water%20for%20about%2010%20minutes%20to%20sterilize%20it.%20Drain%20and%20put%20the%20blueberries%20in%20the%20hot%20jar.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EMeanwhile,%20place%20the%20vinegar%20and%20sugar%20in%20a%20small%20pot%20and%20bring%20it%20to%20a%20boil%20(stir%20it%20to%20dissolve%20the%20sugar).%20Pour%20this%20mixture%20into%20the%20jar%20over%20the%20berries.%20Place%20a%20large%20square%20of%20wax%20paper%20over%20the%20mouth%20of%20the%20jar%20and%20then%20screw%20on%20the%20lid%20(the%20paper%20prevents%20the%20lid%20from%20rusting).%20Shake%20the%20jar%20and%20place%20it%20in%20a%20cool,%20dark%20place%20for%20about%20a%20week.%20Be%20sure%20to%20shake%20the%20jar%20daily.%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3EAfter%20a%20week,%20strain%20out%20the%20blueberries%20and%20store%20the%20vinegar%20a%20clean%20jar%20or%20bottle.%20The%20vinegar%20will%20keep%20at%20room%20temperature%20for%20a%20few%20months%20(and%20even%20longer%20in%20the%20fridge).%3C/p%3E%3Cp%3ETo%20make%20the%20shrub,%20add%20a%20tablespoon%20or%20two%20of%20blueberry%20vinegar%20to%20a%20glass%20and%20top%20with%20seltzer%20water%20and%20ice.%20Give%20it%20a%20little%20stir%20and%20enjoy!%3C/p%3E){kind=link}
