Bisi Bele Bath Masala Powder

Bisi Bele Bath Masala powder recipe. An authentic homemade spice powder using byadgi chilies and marathi moggu that is used to make Karnataka’s special and most famous dish Bisi Bele Bath aka BBB.

Though I often use MTR brand bisi bele bath masala powder, I’m sure that you all will agree that there is nothing compared to homemade fresh powder to make the dish more awesome.

My mom’s neighbor is a kannadiga and every Sunday she makes an awesome bisi bele bath that we all used to gorge on. I loved the aroma of the spices that drifted to our house when she used to roast them. This recipe was noted down by me years ago in my handwritten recipe notebook.

Byadgi chilies or Bedgi Chilies are grown in the Dharwar, Karnataka. They are mildly pungent in nature but give a rich ruby red color to the bisi bele bath masala powder and an aromatic flavor too. These chilies are similar to that of Paprika.

Other two spices that play a pivotal role in this aromatic bisi bele bath masala powder is Marathi moggu and Mace (Javithri). Both give the powder a rich aroma and also lend a sweetish tinge thereby balancing the heat from red chilies and black pepper corns.

Whenever I make this powder, I make it for at least 3-4 servings. After using the required amount for the rice, I stock it in a small glass jar and store it in the fridge.

Make sure that you use up that stocked spice powder within a week as it starts to loosen the freshness and aroma.

I find that not only is this spice powder good in rice, but you can also sprinkle this powder in other vegetarian curries too towards the end and it tastes awesome.
